Sony hopeful PlayStation VR won’t be just a fad

The president of Sony Computer Entertainment Asia and Japan has revealed that the format holder has a plan in place to ensure the upcoming PlayStation VR won’t be just another fad ala motion control gaming and 3D.

Speaking in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine (via GamingBolt), Atsushi Morita said that one of the most important aspects of the technology is to have deep, meaningful gaming experiences, as opposed to software that loses its appeal after a short time.

Morita-san also said that the device must be marketed properly, and Sony is working so that it will allow potential buyers to try out PlayStation VR in kiosks. It’s also going to make a concerted effort to secure game support for the device as much as possible.

PlayStation VR is due out in the first half of 2016 and will be competing with the likes of Oculus Rift. Sony has yet to announce a price point for the headset, although it has indicated the device will be positioned at a similar cost to a new games console. A swiss retailer recently listed PlayStation VR for around £350, though nothing official has been confirmed yet.

Numerous industry figures have chimed in on the subject of PlayStation VR’s price in the last few weeks. Tekken boss Katsuhiro Harada said that the device shouldn’t cost more than $400, while Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities feels it will retail for around the same price.

GameStop chief Paul Raines said that PlayStation VR has the advantage over competing devices in terms of title count, and Sony has confirmed it has over 100 titles in the works for the virtual reality headset. Oculus on the other hand says that while PlayStation VR is an impressive piece of kit, it isn’t quite as high-end as the Rift.
