Epic Games has announced that it has just raised another $1 billion in funding, with Sony investing $200 million into the game developer and publisher.
Revealed in a blog post, the investment comes on top of the $250 million Sony already invested. This “strategic investment” is described as building on their already close relationship and “reinforces the shared mission to advance the state of the art in technology, entertainment, and socially-connected online services”.
Whilst initially, you might be wondering why Sony continues to invest in Epic Games, you have to look at how Epic is building a shared universe of constantly expanding online experiences, like Fall Guys, Rocket League, and Fortnite. These experiences are becoming their own Metaverse and it is smart for Sony to invest in an endeavour that will become a prolific genre in the future, think Ready Player One.
