The production of Shenmue 3 is being partially funded by Sony in addition to the Kickstarter initiative, Adam Boyes, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s (SCEA) VP of Publishing & Developer Relations has revealed.
Speaking to GameSpot, Boyes confirmed that the highly anticipated sequel is getting backing from the console giant, though wouldn’t elaborate any further on the matter.
In related news, Gio Corsi, who heads up Sony’s Third-Party Productions sector, reiterated that Sony is heavily invovled in Shenmue 3’s production, and that they have been talking with creator Yu Suzuki about making the project a reality for some time.
"Sony and PlayStation is definitely a partner in this game, and it’s going to be run through Third-Party Production. We’re going to help Ys Net get the game done, and we’re going to be partners on it the whole way," he said.
"Shenmue III was the number one request on the old #BuildingtheList campaign," he continued. "We met with Suzuki-san at GDC last year, and we started the long road of trying to figure out how we were going to get this made. And we said: the only way that this is going to happen is if fans speak up, and Kickstarter is the perfect place to do this."
Shenmue 3 took less than 24 hours to reach its $2 million Kickstarter goal, following the launch of the crowdfunding initiative during Sony’s E3 2015 press conference earlier this week. The game became the fastest title on Kickstarter to hit the $1 million mark.
Shenmue 3 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 and PC in December 2017.
