Sony Posts $765 Million Impairment Loss Due To Bungie’s Underperformance During FY25

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed during its latest financial results that it has posted a $765 impairment loss due to the underperformance of Destiny 2 developer Bungie across FY25.

The console maker’s Game & Network Services Segment, which houses PlayStation, took a 120.1 billion yen ($765 million) impairment loss against Bungie’s assets, following a 31.5 billion yen ($204.2 million) impairment charge due to the underperformance of Destiny 2 during the second quarter of its fiscal year.

Bungie released its extraction shooter Marathon in early March 2026, and reportedly had a budget of more than $200 million but supposedly failed to reach its sales expectations. Its launch comes during the same quarter that Sony reported the additional 88.6 billion yen impairment charge against Bungie, bringing the total for FY25 to 120.1 billion.

Marathon wasn’t a critical disappointment however, as it picked up some very positive reviews — including a 9/10 from PSU — but that sadly hasn’t seemingly translated into sales. Nonetheless, Bungie has been busy releasing patches since launch and has a clear plan ahead for the shooter, although how it continues to perform in the coming months remains to be seen.

Sony acquired Bungie in July 2022 although despite now falling under the PlayStation umbrella, the company is continuing to operate as a multiform developer and publisher. Prior to this, the company operated under Microsoft’s ownership where it made a name for itself on the Halo franchise.
