Fiscal Year 2023 News PlayStation 5 PS5 PS5 Shipments Sony

Sony Reportedly Aims To Ship 30 Million PS5s In FY23

According to sources at Insider-Gaming, Sony Interactive Entertainment is planning on shipping 30 million PS5s during fiscal year 2023.

This covers the 12-month period March 2023 — March 2024, and follows on from figures unearthed by the site regarding a new detachable disc drive for the PS5. Production of this iteration of the console is expected to start in April 2023 with a release targeting September, the report claims.

The site further adds that Sony is looking at 18 million PS5 sold in FY22 and 30.5 million in FY23, marking an increase of nearly 70% year-on-year. Furthermore, 12 million of the targeted 30 million are reportedly going to be attributed to the “old PlayStation 5,” which will cease production by holiday 2023.

Looking ahead, it is believed that the detachable disc drive PS5 will be made to reduce production costs, as Sony will only need to manufacture one console — with two price points of the digital and disc variations.

Sony announced earlier this year that the PS5 had reached 21.7 million units shipped worldwide. Furthermore, a recent tweet by an MST Financial analyst has revealed that shipments to the US have increased by 400% for September year-on-year.
