During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”
It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.
Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.
Later in the presentation PlayStation also boasts it sees 118 million monthly active users on its platform, across more than 9,000 games having released on PS5 and PS4 from more than 2,000 publishers.
The games industry had a massive boom when the pandemic struck, and while it didn’t do anything to help console sales, software sales rose dramatically across all platforms.
Things have definitely slowed down, and console sales have risen thanks to the end of manufacturing constraints.
But in the context of that boom, the fact that games have never been as expensive as they are now, and that Sony has only raised the price of the PS5, that it would be the most profitable is not a huge shock.
