Sony to cease FIFA sponsorship

Sony has revealed plans to put an end to its sponsorship with global football giant, FIFA.

The electronics manufacturer has been a sponsor of the corporation for eight years, with the deal said to be worth a whopping £222 million.

News comes following a restructuring at Sony that has seen the company trim production on its smartphone and TV business in favor of focusing its efforts on the continued success of PlayStation 4.

It’s all part of a new three-year plan in an effort to drive profitability within the company.

Sony has yet to issue a formal statement on the termination of its sponsorship with FIFA, though a spokesperson for the latter commented, "The existing contract with Sony runs until 31 December 2014 and we are currently in discussions with the brand."
