Sony has confirmed that it will stop providing players with a free PSVR adaptor for their PS5 consoles. When Sony launched the PS5 back in 2020, it did so knowing that it had a new generation of VR headsets coming down the line with PS VR2.
Being the champions of backwards compatibility that they are, Sony made the first generation PSVR incompatible with the fifth generation of PlayStation consoles through the PlayStation Camera. Since the PS5 launched though, anyone with a PSVR who wanted to keep enjoying those games on their PS5 could do so, with an adaptor for the camera that Sony would supply for free.
But they won’t be doing that for much longer. Spotted by VGC, this coming November 26, 2024 “or until supplies last,” Sony adds, will be the end of Sony supporting PSVR players on PS5 with an adaptor.
Up until then, you can still request an adaptor if you need it, but if you wait until the end of the month you’ll be out of luck. Or you’ll be pushing your luck, hoping that supplies of these adaptors will last long enough for you to get one.
It’s been four years of free adaptors, so hopefully those who wanted one have it, and if you miss out, then this seems to be Sony’s way of telling you to hurry up and buy a PS VR2 already, since that headset does not require any adaptor, or a separate camera.
