Square Enix Aims For Majority Of Its QA & Debugging To Be Handled By Generative AI In Next 2 Years

Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix has revealed that it hopes generative AI will handle the bulk of its QA and debugging in the next two years.

Speaking in a progress update on its medium-term business plan following the publication of its latest finical results, the company announced it had formed a partnership with the University of Tokyo’s Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory, which is “aimed at improving the efficiency of game development process through AI technologies.”

The Joint Development of Game QA Automation Technology Using Generative AI project is being overseen by “a joint research team of more than ten members,” including University of Tokyo researchers and Square Enix’s own group of engineers. The overall goal is to “automate 70% of QA and debugging tasks in game development by the end of 2027.”

Square Enix says this will “aim to improve the efficiency of QA operations and establish a competitive advantage in game development.”

Back in May 2025, Square Enix revealed that it had launched its three-year reboot strategy that will see the publisher put more emphasis on quality over quantity. The company said in its latest financials at the time that it was working on a “mid-to-long-term pipeline to achieve a shift from quality to quantity,” with these plans expected to be complete by the end of March 2027.
