Square Enix May Be Opening A New Western Branch Called Studio Onoma

A trademark application spotted on the Canadian Trademarks Database by website VGC points to a new studio called Studio Onoma likely being a new western studio from Square Enix.

The applicant is a London based Square Enix company, Square Enix Newco Limited, and the fact that this application showed up in the Canadian database indicates the studio will be based in Canada, likely even Montreal, as it is a large hub of game development talent.

It could be possible that Studio Onoma is meant to be the sole development source for Square’s western-focused titles, instead of trying to manage the multiple teams it used to before its deal with Embracer Group.

According to the application, services provided by Studio Onoma will be the:

“Publishing of computer game software and video game software…Design and development of all aspects of computer games and video games; design and development of computer software for use in the field of computer and video games.”

Square Enix has yet to make a public statement about the studio, though with the trademark currently pending, it could be that an announcement isn’t planned for anytime soon.
