Square Enix has revealed in a newly-published results briefing that sales of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy XVI did not meet the publisher’s internal expectations.
The briefing was originally held in May, but it’s only now that the results have been made available for public consumption. Square Enix noted that “profits unfortunately did not meet [its] expectations. Despite the release of Foamstars and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in Q4, initial sales were not as strong as expected.”
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth arrived in April 2024, so around one month before the briefing took place, and like Final Fantasy XVI is a timed PS5 console exclusive, although in the case of the latter it’s just come out on PC. Looking ahead, Square Enix is firmly focussed on multiplatform gaming experiences.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second chapter in the three-party Final Fantasy VII Remake project, the final chapter of which is currently in development and is targeting a 2027 launch. Final Fantasy XVI meanwhile arrived in June 2023, and according to the director of its DLC expansions, was successful in attracting a younger audience.
