Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Nearly Wasn’t A Jedi Game Due To LucasFilm Initially Pushing Against The Idea

Speaking during an interview with The Guardian, Star Wars Jedi Survivor Game Director Stig Asmussen has revealed that LucasFilms was initially set against making Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order a Jedi gamed due to being so protective over the Star Wars canon.

Asmussen revealed that the company was instead pushing for the idea of ‘Force users’ instead of Jedi, but Respawn managed to convince them to base the new series around Cal Kestis, one of the last surviving Jedi. Having said that, Asmussen admitted that he was at one point considering leaving the project prior to securing the Jedi backstory.

To Lucasfilm, the Jedi are like the holy grail. I mean, it’s something that they’re probably the most protective of, except for maybe Baby Yoda. So we had to kind of earn that. We had to go through a whole process of, why do you want it to be a Jedi? What do you want to do with the Jedi? They were really uncomfortable with Jedi, and they said, ‘Let’s reset this. Let’s call this character a Force user.

I’m like, well I think you have the wrong person for the job. That’s not my background. My background came from God of War … I’ve never worked on a shooter, and you need a different team to do that. You might as well be asking me to make a racing game. And eventually over time, we built that trust to the point where we ended up calling [the franchise] Jedi.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is scheduled for release on April 28, 2023 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. You can read our hands-on preview here.
