Stereoscopic high definition 3D possible on PS3?

PS3Center is reporting from the 3D Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles about new display technology developed by UK-based Blitz Games, which allows PlayStation 3 to push out stereoscopic 3D.

And just what is stereoscopic 3D, we hear you ask? Invented way, way back in 1840, it’s a display technique that uses two different images of a scene to create the impression of three-dimensional depth. It’s a common enough method in the movie biz, but has been considered almost impossible to achieve on videogame consoles.

Till now, anyway. Andrew Oliver, CEO of Blitz Games (whose products include such starlets as Tak and the Guardians of Gross and Bratz: Girls Really Rock) described the development as "an incredibly exciting and huge step forward for videogames."

"Our BlitzTech technology will prove beyond all doubt that we are already doing what some industry experts have said is impossible on today’s game consoles," he went on. "Our highly tuned engine is capable of producing real-time interactive graphics that are close to offline rendered CG movie quality."

Not all TVs will be able to take advantage of BlitzTech, so check your manual before you invest. Not that you’ll be able to invest just yet – Oliver declined to discuss how the new technology would be sold and what its likely price point would be.
