SEGA’s upcoming Streets of Rage movie at Lionsgate has made some significant steps forward reports Variety, with Pat Casey and Josh Miller of Sonic the Hedgehog fame jumping on board the project as writers. In addition, Jeymes Samuel has joined Streets of Rage as director.
Previously, Derek Kolstad had provided an early script for the Streets of Rage movie before exiting the project, with Casey and Miller replacing him. While plot details are being kept largely under wraps, it has been revealed that the film will lean “heavily into the cult classic game known for its iconic characters, acclaimed electronic soundtrack and beat ’em up action.”
Streets of Rage was originally released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991, and is known as Bare Knuckle in Japan. The game was followed by Street of Rage II (1992), Streets of Rage 3 (1994), and after a lengthy hiatus returned with Streets of Rage 4 in 2020. SEGA announced during The Game Awards 2023 that it is working on a new Streets of Rage project alongside reviving other IPs such as Crazy Taxi and Golden Axe.
