Surgeons Use PS Move Controller To Perform Endoscopic Procedure On Pig Over 5,500 Miles Away

The PS Move controller was utilised by a group of surgeons by perform an endoscopy procedure on a pig located in Hong Kong, some 5,780 miles away from their location in Switzerland.

The procedure was the result of a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and ETH Zurich, and used the DualSense controller and the PS Move to perform the operation. Speaking on the feat, Dr. Shannon Melissa Chan, assistant professor at the Department of Surgery at CU Medicine, commented:

Teleoperated endoscopy offers not only remote surgical training and mentoring but also immediate diagnostic and surgical care in remote areas, particularly when local expertise is lacking. A remote expert can even instruct trained nurses to perform the procedures. Millions of patients worldwide will be able to be diagnosed and treated for gastrointestinal cancer in a timely manner as endoscopic technology becomes more accessible.

Dr. Bradley Nelson, a professor at ETH Zurich, added that the research obtained by the team will soon allow them to perform a tele-endoscopy on a human stomach, though it isn’t known at this point if PlayStation devices will be utilised. Nelson did, however, say that there is potential for the tech to help with endoscopic procedures in other areas.

The PS Move was released back in 2010 and was Sony’s answer to the Wii remote, during a time where motion controls were all the rage. While the device was originally conceived for the PS3, Sony expanded its use beyond that console to make PS Move compatible with the PS4 and PSVR (the PSVR 2 uses its own ‘Sense’ controllers instead). The PS Move utilises the PlayStation Eye or PlayStation Camera to track its position.
