Gearbox Entertainment, the studio behind Borderlands, is set to be acquired by publishing giant Take-Two for a reported $460 million.
Helmed by Randy Pitchford, Gearbox would operate under 2K Games, which has published Borderlands for a number of years now and would free Gearbox from the shackles of Embracer Group, which has laid off hundreds of people as part of a restricting process.

Pitchford commented:
Joining forces with Take-Two Interactive and 2K will help Gearbox ascend to our next level. Take-Two and 2K have demonstrated repeatedly their commitment to our engine of generating creativity, happiness, and profit. We set the bar for interactive entertainment and achieved remarkable results with ground-breaking, record-setting games when we worked together at arm’s length as partners. I’m incredibly excited about what we can accomplish now that we’re fully aligned as one.
Gearbox is currently working on a number of projects that include five sequels, and the Take-Two buyout will see the developer retain IP rights to key franchises such as Borderlands, Homeworld, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem.
