Tarsier Studios’ New Horror Game “Reanimal” Revealed

Little Nightmares 1 & 2 developer Tarsier Studios isn’t making the third game in the franchise, instead that’s currently incoming from Supermassive Games.

What Tarsier has done instead, in the words of narrative director Dave Mervik, is continually worked to “evolve” the style and kind of game Tarsier coined with those first two Little Nightmares titles.

That’s what brings us to the reveal of Tarsier’s upcoming title, Reanimal, a game that might, at first glance, look very much like Little Nightmares, but according to Tarsier is functionally a huge leap from what they were doing previously.

Tarsier revealed Reanimal to the general public today during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live show, but a few members of press (PSU included) were given the chance to check out the reveal and hear more on Reanimal from the developers themselves.

You can check out the trailer that premiered during the 2024 s ONL show for yourself, below.

There are five children that are important to the plot but for now it seems like you’ll only be able to play as two of them, as these kids work to find out what happened to the home they once loved.

Speaking of the story, Tarsier says that there will be some voice acting featured in the storytelling and a few cutscenes, though that’s not how the story is mainly driven. It’ll still be told in a way closer to the visual style players of Little Nightmares will recognize.

Which is another point which shows that, while there are elements of Reanimal that really feel close to Little Nightmares, the team at Tarsier is differentiating it by trying things it simply didn’t do with Little Nightmares.

One point the developers spoke on in the Q/A period was that they had a time in Reanimal’s development where they realized they were making poorer choices in an effort to be needlessly different from Little Nightmares.

When that understanding seeped in, they instead began embracing what they already knew they were good at, a certain style of game they’d established, while trying to push it further than before, in a totally new setting.

Hopefully the final release of Reanimal is able to really show that Tarsier was able to “evolve” itself and how it makes games.
