Update: ThatGameCompany has gone on record and stated that while they are targetting a larger audience than just that of the PS3, it has not yet been determined if future games will be multiplatform or not.
ThatGameCompany today revealed that the company will now release games independent of Sony, which will in turn raise project budgets and allow its games to be released on multiple platforms.
Formed in 2006, ThatGameCompany has created various benchmark PlayStation Network titles such as flOw, Flower, and the fastest-selling game in PSN history, Journey. The unique, artistically-driven developers have now partnered with Benchmark Capital and have raised $5.5M to create games for wider audiences.
“Today I am pleased to announce thatgamecompany has raised funding to develop and release our games independently,” stated Jenova Chen via the company blog. “This enables us to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact.”
“We are very excited about our new adventure. Please stay tuned, as we look forward to sharing with you more details about our next game soon,” she added.
Journey was one of our favorite PSN-exclusive games ever, and while it’s unfortunate for Sony that ThatGameCompany is no longer exclusive to the PlayStation platform, the fact that more audiences will have the opportunity to experience such games is a good thing.
