The Beatles join Rock Band

Activision Blizzard must have been feeling pretty pleased with itself when it snapped up Metallica for a future edition of Guitar Hero. But rival MTV has just gone one better. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Rock Band publisher has licensed several songs by The Beatles for its next foray into peripheral-driven pop mayhem.

MTV isn’t simply the first videogame publisher to license those lads from Liverpool for its product, of course – it’s the first publisher of digital media, period. Even Apple Corp, that pioneer of the modern music biz, has so far failed to persuade the band’s remaining members to release their back catalogue as a download.

The Journal is basing its report on the say-so of "several people familiar with the matter," but you can expect an official announcement at 2.00 P.M. today UK-time. Why don’t you spend the intervening hours posting all the Beatles jokes we’ve scrupulously resisted writing into this article? Make Sergeant Pepper proud.
