Kurt Kuhlmann, a former developer with Bethesda who served as co-lead designer on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has revealed during an interview with PCGamer that the main setting for The Elder Scrolls VI was decided during production of Fallout 4, which came out in 2015.
From when we were talking about it way back in the Fallout 4 timeframe, there was a sort of consensus amongst a few people that were talking about it. We had an idea, but it was more of a consensus, like, ‘OK, where should the next game be?’ And the people that were talking all agreed. It was not an argument. It was like, well, obviously, it should be here. We were more in the feel of it, in the setting; there was no story involved yet.
Given that Kuhlmann has since departed Bethesda, he noted that he isn’t sure if anything has changed in regards to The Elder Scrolls VI’s settings following his departure. “I haven’t been involved in that level of the story side of things since Skyrim,” he commented.
As previously reported, Kuhlmann stated in the same interview that he was originally set to lead production on The Elder Scrolls VI, and that he had a vision for the project being the series’ Empire Strikes Back. Kuhlmann ended up departing Bethesda in 2023.
The Elder Scrolls VI was announced at E3 2018 and we haven’t seen a single screenshot or art work on the project since then. Todd Howard, an executive with Bethesda Game Studios, revealed during an interview last year that development on the fantasy-RPG is “progressing really well,” although there’s still no release date in sight.
