Digital Foundry has unearthed some rather troublesome performance issues on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered across multiple formats including PS5, revealing the game appears to steadily perform worse over time.
Thomas Morgan revealed that there are instances of sub-60 FPS performances from the game, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are prone to crashes after loading a save on too many occasions.
No platform is spared of issues: whether it’s PS5, PS5 Pro, or either Xbox Series machine, all struggle with traversal hitches while roaming the open world. Secondly, there’s major sub-60fps frame-rates, where I’ve also discovered that performance slowly degrades with more playing time – quite possibly down to a memory leak. And finally, software freezes are the icing on the cake, with all PlayStation and Xbox platforms crashing to the system menu on loading a save one too many times.

The DF report explains that a “charged” play through featuring more continuous playtime turns up a weaker performance than a freshly-booted hands-on with Oblivion Remastered. One of the issues that can occur is the camera is positioned too high while riding your horse, which can be remedied by resetting the game.
“It’s a dire position for any remaster to be in and developer Virtuos needs to address the game’s stability – the crashes – as a priority,” added Morgan.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was released for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on April 22, 2025, and quickly attracted four million players worldwide. In addition, the game already ranks as the third best-selling video game of 2025 in the US so far.
