The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim developer, Bethesda Game Studios, wants to open up its set of mod tools, currently reserved for the PC community at launch, to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers.
Speaking with AusGamers, Bethesda head Todd Howard reveals that the developer has been talking to Sony and Microsoft about the best way to implement a mod kit on consoles.
Howard points to games like Forza 3 and Rock Band, who have paved the way for other developers to think about and implement modding tools on their console creations.
"The good news is that those things have started to happen with games like Forza 3 and sharing all your car stuff or Rock Band’s a really good example, where you can make your own tracks where you’re authoring them somewhere else then you’re uploading them to the 360,” he said.
"There are still a lot of issues to solve because these aren’t instances like a song or a car. You could download a mod that destroys your game and we can’t have that. So we’re still… we have not solved – even on paper yet – how to handle security, how do we handle not messing up your saved games and things like that.”
Though Howard hasn’t said that a mod kit will definitely be made available for Skyrim for console gamers, he does suggest that it will be coming – just not right at the very start.
"So it’s not going to be solved for the game’s release," he said. "But it’s something that we’re going to continue to look at because we think that it’s an awesome part of the game that the majority of our audience isn’t seeing.”
“It’s something that we would really like to do," he concluded.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is due for release on November 11, 2011 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Can you imagine the possibilities?
