The product manager for Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that pre-orders for The Last Guardian are exceeding the company’s internal expectations.
While Joe Palmer couldn’t go into any specific detail as to how well the game is performing ahead of release, he did make it clear the long-awaited title is off to a solid start.
“I can’t comment with specific details, but I can say that pre-orders for The Last Guardian are exceeding expectations,” said Palmer, during an interview with MCV. “We’ve seen a really positive response to the Collector’s Edition in particular, which despite its higher price point, proves there’s a huge appetite for the game.”
“When you’re working on a game that has such incredibly high levels of expectation, it’s impossible not to consider the pressure of meeting player expectations,” he added. “We’ve tried to avoid fuelling the hype by playing on the fact that people have been waiting a long time for this. We want people to be excited because the game looks incredible, not because of its complicated development story.”
The Last Guardian release date is almost upon us
The Last Guardian is scheduled for release exclusively on PlayStation 4 on December 6 in the U.S. and December 9 in the U.K. Developed by Sony and genDESIGN, the game was originally announced at E3 2009 for the PS3, before development shifted to the PS4 a few years later amidst various production issues.
Created by Fumito Ueda, who worked on the PS2 classics ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian follows the story of a young boy who is trapped within heavily-fortified walled structure, and must find his way out by overcoming various traps and environmental puzzles. While there, he befriends Trico; a large, benevolent creature that aids him in escaping the castle and fending off its hostile inhabitants.
