Circana’s Mat Piscatella has revealed that the PS5 was the best-selling hardware platform in the US in terms of unit and dollar sales for 2023.
While spending in the video game sector for 2023 stalled at $6.6 billion — as in, there was no growth year-on-year — the PS5 managed to offset the decline across Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S, continuing its strong performance that began early last year when the long-running stock shortages ended.
Here’s what Piscatella had to say on Twitter:
Video game hardware spending ended 2023 flat vs YA, at $6.6B. Growth in PlayStaton 5 hardware dollar sales helped offset declines across both Xbox Series and Switch. PlayStation 5 ended 2023 as the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars.

Sony announced recently that PS5 has now shipped 50 million unites worldwide since its release in November 2020. As mentioned, 2023 was a huge year for the console as the stock shortages that plagued the system for nearly two years came to an end. During that time, the console was extremely hard to get hold of, with retailers offering limited stock that would often be snapped up within seconds, sometimes by scalpers who went on to resell PS5 for a huge price.
