Naughty Dog has said that it has no plans for a new Uncharted game following the release of next month’s Uncharted: The Lost Legacy on PlayStation 4.
Speaking with Red Bull, the studio’s creative director, Shaun Escayg, revealed the California-based developer is focusing on The Last of Us Part 2 following the release of The Last Legacy, but nothing is in the pipeline beyond that.
“I don’t think anyone at Naughty Dog wants to do another full game in a year. It was intense, but the team, they were really passionate about doing this game and that’s why it succeeded. If we knew now that we were making that full game in a year, we probably would have hesitated. But we were already invested from the moment we pitched it and it was a snowball after that.”
“We have no immediate plans [for another Uncharted game]. But if there’s anything this game proves that this world is beyond Nathan Drake, there’s other cast, other characters – you’ve got quite a vast amount of cast to pull from in the future if you so wanted.”
Uncharted 5 release is not looking likely
This isn’t exactly surprising news, seeing as how Naughty Dog has previously said that it isn’t planning to develop a new instalment in the action-adventure franchise. In fact, last year it said that it’s pretty much done with the series, although has not ruled out the possibility of Uncharted 5 being developed by another studio.
Uncharted remains one of Sony’s best-selling first-party titles, so we can’t imagine the format holder letting it go without shopping it to other studios. The series has sold over 30 million copies worldwide since its inception in 2007, with Uncharted 4 selling over eight million units alone.
Interestingly, Naughty Dog has suggested that the series could continue without hero Nathan Drake. Could we possibly see a new game starring Sully or Sam? We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is due out in late August.
