Uncharted 5: Six great studios that could take over from Naughty Dog

uncharted 5 release

Who wouldn’t love more Uncharted?

Naughty Dog may have ruled out working on Uncharted 5, or any other Uncharted spin-off for the time being, but will Sony really pull the plug on one of its biggest franchises? We highly doubt it.

Though we may have to wait a while for a new Uncharted game (perhaps until the PS5 release?), it’s surely going to come. The big question is: if Naughty Dog isn’t going to be behind development of an epic new adventure, then who is?

Here are six likely contenders who have all the skills it needs to produce a successful new Uncharted game.

Sucker Punch Productions
Having worked exclusively with Sony Interactive Entertainment since 2000, the Washington-based developer is no stranger to triple-A productions. Having produced a trilogy of games in the PlayStation-exclusive inFamous series, this team knows exactly how to deliver explosive action! Sucker Punch has been very quiet since the launch of inFamous: First Light in 2014, though it was hired for unannounced game this year, but we for one wouldn’t mind at all if they took on a new Uncharted game.

Supermassive Games
British developer SuperMassive Games love a bit of drama! The highly acclaimed Until Dawn was a fantastic piece of cinematic gaming that focused heavily on character development, something that is very close to the heart of the Uncharted games. The team has even won BAFTAs for its storytelling. Stepping up to the plate and taking on something as huge as Uncharted 5 would be a big undertaking, but the talent is most definitely there.

Guerilla Games
Sony’s Guerilla Games seems like the perfect candidate to take on Uncharted 5 after massive success with its Killzone franchises and the spectacular Horizon Zero Dawn. The team knows how to create epic games, but the fact that Horizon Zero Dawn has proven already to be a critical success suggests it’s more likely to concentrate on a sequel rather than going off in a brand new direction. Still, Guerilla Games has all it needs to take the mantle from Naughty Dog. We’re happy to wait for them if need be! Uncharted 2020 release on a 10FLOP PS5? Yes!

Santa Monica Studio
Sony Santa Monica Studio has a fantastic track record working on numerous PlayStation games, not to mention one of the best exclusive titles in the history of PlayStation, God of War. Currently, the team is working on the new God of War for PS4, but work should be wrapped up on that this year, leaving the studio with a big space for a new venture. Could that be Uncharted 5?

Sony Bend

SIE’s Sony Bend could be the perfect studio to take over the development of the Uncharted series. Having already worked on the franchise with the PlayStation Vita games Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, the team knows the series well. Currently, Sony Bend is working on the open-world, action-adventure Days Gone, so it’s likely going to be tied up with that for a while. Take a look at that Days Gone gameplay footage though, because it’s not far off from the visuals and some of the mechanics that you might see in an Uncharted game.

Insomniac Games
The Spyro series creator has had quite a career working alongside PlayStation. With the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance series proving to be highly entertaining, the team is currently hard at work on the fabulous-looking new Spider-Man game, which is being published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. This triple-A action game, set across an open-world New York City landscape, could be the perfect practice for a team looking to grow even further and become the next Uncharted developer.

At this point, we have no confirmation that there’ll actually be a new Uncharted game, but we can dream, can’t we?
