Crystal Dynamics‘ Will Kerslake has revealed during chat with GamesRadar+ that the upcoming Tomb Raider Catalyst will continue the story previously established in Tomb Raider Underworld, which was released back in 2008 and formed part of the ‘Legend’ rebooted series.
From a timeline perspective, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set years after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld, with the reboot trilogy serving as her origin story, so we’re seeing a more experienced Lara Croft. What’s important to know is that this is a new chapter in Tomb Raider. So whether you followed Lara from the start, or this is your first Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is designed to stand on its own as an adventure that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Tomb Raider Catalyst was one of two new Tomb Raider games announced during The Game Awards 2025 on Friday evening, the other being Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. The game is set to launch in 2027 and will see Lara Croft venturing to Northern India, where she battles against rival relic hunters while attempting to uncover the mystery behind some long-forgotten architecture.
The Tomb Raider series marks its 30th anniversary in 2026, having originally launched in Fall 1996 for the Sega Saturn and PC, with a PlayStation version following soon after.
