Square Enix has announced that the Tomb Raider reboot has sold 8.5 million copies globally since its launch in March 2013.
The game’s success has made it the biggest-selling title in the Tomb Raider franchise to date, surpassing even the 1996 original, which sold around 7.5 million copies.
Interestingly, the figure also puts the action-adventure title ahead of any single Uncharted title to date, although Tomb Raider is a multiformat game, so has the advantage of selling to consumers on PlayStation and Xbox formats.
Regardless, it’s a significant milestone for the title, and should hopefully please Square Enix after the publisher previously said that initial sales of the game fell below expectations. The title eventually turned a profit in January 2014.
The next chapter in the Tomb Raider franchise is due out as a timed exclusive on Xbox One this holiday season. Sony has expressed hope that the sequel will eventually hit PS4, although nothing official has been confirmed at this stage.
