Top 5 most anticipated PS4 games – 2017

PlayStation 4 enjoyed arguably its strongest year to date in 2016, although you can almost attribute that to the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End alone given the immense pulling power of Naughty Dog’s trinket-pinching adventure series. Still, flanked by such first-party releases as The Last Guardian and Ratchet & Clank, plus third-party heavyweights Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, and Rise of the Tomb Raider, and it’s not hard to see why Sony’s flagship console turned heads. Oh, and there’s the small matter of PlayStation VR and PlayStation 4 Pro to boot.

Still, with 2017 just over the hill, it’s time to cast our eyes at what PS4 is offering up for the next 12 months—and from the look of things, we’re in for another bumper year. Pesky delays notwithstanding, here’s our top 5 most anticipated PS4 games – 2017.

Resident Evil 7: biohazard

Capcom’s kicking off 2017 in style with the release of Resident Evil 7: biohazard, which looks set to bring the venerated survival horror franchise back to its roots after the boulder-punching, action-focused antics of the previous few games. Set from a first-person viewpoint for the first time in a mainline Resi title, this latest series installment takes place on a spooky plantation mansion in the southern U.S., with players controlling newcomer Ethan Winters as he battles the insane Baker family while searching for his missing wife, Mia. With greater emphasis on puzzle solving, item management, and a perpetual, gut-wrenching fear that brews from the offset, Resi 7 looks set to lay the foundations for a new breed of horror as PS4 enters its fourth year on the market.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Guerrilla Games’ ambitious new IP sees the Amsterdam-based studio eschewing the trappings of first-person shooters in favor of open-world adventuring. Yep, Horizon: Zero Dawn couldn’t be more disparate to the Killzone series that has defined Guerilla Games for over a decade now, and we’re thankful they decided to take the bold step into new territory. Horizon sees gamers exploring a post-apocalyptic landscape as seasoned hunter Alloy, who must battle against mechanical behemoths to salvage their parts to aid in the survival of her people. With stunning environments to explore, adrenaline-pumping combat, and interactive dialogue, Horizon is shaping up to be one of the most beautiful and original PS4 games of 2017.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Naughty Dog may be walking away from Uncharted following its work on the fourth game, but its parting gift comes in the shape of this meaty-looking adventure starring Chloe Fraser and Nadine Ross. Set after the events of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, this standalone romp sees both women teaming up on the hunt for a mythical object known as the Tusk of Ganesh, which finds the duo travelling to India’s Western Ghats mountain rage. Playing as Chloe looks set to add a new dimension to Uncharted’s pitch-perfect marriage of platforming and action, as she’s a totally different brawler and personality to Drake; likewise, it’ll be great to see what she’s been up to all this time, and give Nadine a chance to shine, as she was somewhat underdeveloped in Uncharted 4. It’s still early days, but already the locations are looking positively sumptuous, and we can’t wait to see what mysteries Chloe and Nadine will unravel when The Lost Legacy hits PS4 in 2017.

Mass Effect Andromeda

It’s been almost five years since Mass Effect 3 wrapped up Commander Shepard’s galactic battle against the Reapers, and we’re itching to delve back into BioWare’s richly-detailed world of aliens, exploration, and relationship building. Mass Effect Andromeda is set to debut in spring 2017, and it’s clear that the team has been making a concerted effort to make this the biggest and best entry in the franchise to date. This time around, we’re placed in the boots of one of the Ryder siblings, who, as the Pathfinder, is tasked with exploring the titular Andromeda galaxy in search of a new home for humanity. Exploration is at the nucleus of Andromeda’s gameplay, with the Mako making a comeback after a long hiatus, allowing players to explore uncharted planets and uncover new secrets and hidden bases ripe for looting. Combat has also been fully revamped, with verticality added into the mix thanks to Ryder’s jetpack, and you can expect a plethora of powers to wield against enemies. With an intricate storyline promised featuring hosts of new characters to meet and interact with, Mass Effect Andromeda looks set to take the series to the next level.

Gran Turismo Sport

Sony’s flagship racing series returns in 2017 complete with PlayStation VR compatibility, with Gran Turismo Sport ushering in a new era for the celebrated franchise with its PS4 debut. Lush cars aside, Polyphony Digital’s latest turbocharged outing offers a wealth of content for players to tuck into, with three core game modes to chow down on: Campaign, Sports, and Arcade. While eschewing the dynamic weather and day/night cycle of previous iterations, GT Sport more than makes up for its lack of extra visual polish by offering more content than ever, with both offline and online racing available for petrol heads to enjoy.
