Ubisoft announces Avatar, the "first major 3D game"

James Cameron graced today’s Ubisoft E3 press conference to reveal Avatar, the official game of the movie.

Avatar is not, however, “a slave to the movie,” as Cameron put it. The game has already been in development for two and a half years, and the development team brought the same passion to Avatar as Ubisoft brings to all of its original properties.

Avatar takes place in the 22nd century on Pandora, a large moon. The game lets you play from two perspectives — a human perspective and a Na’vi perspective.

The world of the Avatar game is “considerably richer” than that of the film, according to Cameron. The game features new characters, vehicles, weapons, and settings. The development team is working closely with the film crew to create an accurate, yet unique version of the Avatar universe. The folks at Ubisoft have access to all of the films 3D assets.

Speaking of 3D, Avatar will be the first major stereoscopic 3D game. Since the movie is 3D, Cameron wanted the game to be in 3D.

Avatar will be available on December 18, 2009, but we hope to bring you some impressions from the E3 expo. Stay tuned.
