Uncharted 4 dev talks new mechanics and plans ‘to expand the game as a whole’

Not content with dropping some incredible artwork, lush jungle screens and storyline teases, Naughty Dog is drip-feeding us Uncharted 4 information again, this time focusing on the new mechanics of the flashlight.

In an interview with Spanish site HobbyConsolas,Naughty Dog chats about the ways in which Nathan Drake will be using his flashlight. In one section, lead designer Ricky Cambier talks about Nathan’s search for his brother where he has to explore a cave. He hints that using the flashlight to explore dark areas may reveal the ‘mysteries of the island’.

“Yes, there will be a variety of scenarios exploiting the flashlight, always in relation the story. For example in the demo [shown at PSX], while looking for his brother Nathan must enter a cave; some of the mysteries of the island will be observed while exploring its darkness,” says Ricky.

Naughty Dog then goes on to compare the flashlight technology used in Uncharted 4 to that in The Last Of Us where the flashlight can be used to highlight important things and solve puzzles. The fact that Naughty Dog is highlighting the flashlight in this interview, sounds like it’s going to be a mechanic that is used widely…perhaps we can expect more indoor locations and darker areas to explore than previous games?

"The good thing about the flashlight technology that we already used in The Last of Us is that, even though you’re entering a dark area, it’s not actually dark once you use the flashlight, and this creates a balance of sorts," says Director Bruce Straley.

"Whenever we introduce new mechanics, we try to make it as efficient as possible in order to expand the game as a whole. For example, in this case you’ll be using the flashlight in puzzles to reveal something or even to highlight things in the environment, such as those crabs you see in the demo entering a skeleton. Small details like that gain importance simply by pointing the flashlight, which makes you feel part of the world."

Though it’s not the flashlight-focused gameplay that most excites us about Uncharted 4, it’s great to hear that the team is pushing the tech to ensure that players are totally immersed in its game world. We’re sure it will look fantastic.

One thing’s for sure, we can be certain that Uncharted 4 will look even better than Uncharted 4.
