The Tom Holland-fronted Uncharted movie has pulled in $44 million in the US during its opening weekend, reportedly making it the fourth biggest opening for a video game movie in the country.
Erik Davis, managing editor at Fandango, Uncharted was topped by only three other video game movies, namely Tomb Raider (2001), Detective Pikachu, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Uncharted has already pulled in $139 million worldwide against a $120 million budget, so it’s obviously off to a good start.
David Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research commented to Variety:
Action adventures based on video games are big movies and this weekend’s figure is nearly double the average for the genre. Budgets run high, so Uncharted needs to connect in every market. So far, it is doing that.
