Unreal Engine 4 may not be out for next gen consoles

Don’t expect to see the next generation of Unreal tech in the near future. According to Epic Games’ Mark Rein, Unreal Engine 4 won’t come out until there are “massively multi-core processors” available in consoles. We may not even see the next Unreal Engine in the next generation of consoles, he said.

Speaking with Kotaku at the DICE gaming summit, Rein said that the Unreal Engine 3 has quite a lot left to offer. “Unreal Engine 4 is designed for the day we get massively multi-core processors,” he said.

Just about every action game, from Borderlands to Batman: Arkham Asylum utilizes the UE3. There has been speculation that the engine would be ready for 2012, but it appears Rein has quelled any hopes that a new engine will be out soon – especially for this current generation of consoles.
