Virtual Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown producer Seiji Aoki has revealed that he sees the recent eSports offering in the series as a stepping stone towards a potential Virtual Fighter 6.
SEGA hasn’t made any plans to continue the franchise at this point, and if it were to do so, then Aoki-san revealed that it would have to provide some meaningful innovation to the genre. However, it seems VF eSports could be the first step in the right direction.
According to a translation of an interview with Aoki and Tekkie’s Katsuhiro Harada at 4Gamer, SEGA didn’t give VF eSports the green light until it was combined with the studio’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Not only will this help gauge interest in the franchise, but also ‘cultivate an audience’ as any potential VF 6 would take around three-five years to make.

Virtua Fighter was the brainchild of Yu Suzuki and Seiichi Ishii, with the first game arriving in arcades back in 1993 before being ported to the Sega Saturn in 1994 in Japan and the following year in the US and UK.
The original game was highly revolutionary at the time and went on to produce a number of sequels, ushering in a new era for the fighting game genre throughout the 90s.
