Focus Entertainment and Auroch Digital have staple-gunned a May 23, 2023 release date to retro-flavoured shooter Warhammer 40,000 Boltgun on PS4 & PS5.
For those who haven’t been keeping up, Warhammer 40,000 Boltgun sees players taking on the role of a battle-hardened Space Marine on a galaxy-wide mission to battle against the Warriors and demos of Chaos. The game combines classic first-person shooter gameplay with a 90s visual style — think classic DOOM and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect.
Speaking in a PlayStation Blog post, the team revealed a bit more about the design process behind Warhammer 40,000 Bolton:
In past classic shooters, enemies were simply dropped into the environment for you to shoot like a very sophisticated target range. Boltgun features a modern take on this. On top of plenty of classic locations with enemies diligently hand placed, there’s also areas where waves of heretics are dynamically spawned by an intelligent system to seek the most exciting positions to challenge the player. In these situations, designers pick the enemies using a “nodegraph” and construct escalating “encounters.”
Warhammer 40,000 Boltgun is due out on May 23 for PS5, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
