What do We Know about the Upcoming Film Adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima?

A live-action adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is now in development by Sony Pictures. Chad Stahelski, who is the director of the John Wick series, is set to direct this upcoming movie. Although we don’t have a definitive date for when the movie is going to hit cinemas across the country, we do know a bit about the story.

We know that the story is going to follow Jin Sakai’s fight against the invasion of Tsushima, and that Sucker Punch Productions are serving as executive producers. Interestingly, Sucker Punch Productions also developed the game, so fans can look forward to an honest adaptation that pays homage to the original title.

What We Know So Far about the Upcoming Adaptation

So far, we know that the script is being written by Takashi Doscher. They were named as the writer back in 2022, but the fact that the movie has not been released yet indicates that there have been some delays with the production. As of right now, Sony hasn’t stated who is going to be starring in the production, but fans have put forth their own hypothetical castings for who they want to see take part in the movie.

Stahelski, the director of the movie, has released a statement saying that he wants the movie to have a Japanese cast, who speak in Japanese to honor the original story. He believes that as long as the actors are talented, they are going to be a good fit for the role. One popular choice for the main role, especially for Lord Shimura, is Hiroyuki Sanada. Fans believe he would be perfect and that he also aligns with the director’s vision. Daisuke Tsuji, who does the voice of Jin Sakai in the game, has also announced that he is very eager to partake in the movie, though nothing has been confirmed so far. The next steps are to lock in the cast and to make sure that the movie is able to please both diehard fans and broader audiences to be a success at the box office.

The Popularity of Japan in Modern Media

That this film is being made with some major American crewmembers and studios involved is in-keeping with a longstanding fascination the West has had with Japan. The country has been incredibly prevalent in modern media, as anyone can see by looking at the many releases over the last decade.

Television shows, such as Shogun, have dominated streaming platforms. Last year, Shogun hit 9 million views, beating other popular shows like The Bear. We are also seeing a strong rise in the number of games that are set in Japan. Assassin’s Creed, for example, is set entirely in Japan. Other titles, including slot games like Jade Shuriken and Sword of Shoguns, feature pagodas, katanas, and numerous other recognizable Japanese elements. Other high-profile releases to be set in Japan include the upcoming Silent Hill f, and, even though it’s not been confirmed yet, Forza Horizon 6 is said to be set in Japan, with numerous leaks and developer activity indicating that people could soon be able to drive Kei cars.

Issues Faced with the Development of the Movie

Even though fans are eagerly anticipating more news regarding the upcoming adaptation, the director has confirmed that there have been a few roadblocks so far. He’s announced that they do have a script and that the team is working hard to get everything in order. The director said that strikes have delayed things a little, with the team taking their time to find suitable locations. Scouting with any movie takes a very long time, but for adaptations like this, location plays a very important role, so getting it right is key.

With that said, things look to be moving along nicely, and even though we don’t have a specific date yet, it seems that we could be getting close to an official announcement. The cogs are turning, and developers are working hard to get the project moving. With that said, there could be issues behind the scenes that we aren’t aware of, but with the script being finished, it seems that some of the biggest elements are already set in stone and greenlit.
