Sony’s commitment to providing indie developers with an accessible platform to create their games and self-publish has been proving immensely popular, and with the release of PieceFall on PS4 it’s great to see that students have also being given an opportunity to get their games out there to the masses.
PieceFall has been hailed as the first game ever to be released on a PlayStation platform by students and is part of its PlayStation First Initiative, an academic development programme that gives universities access to the development hardware and software development kit (SDK) needed to create games.
PieceFall is available on PS4 via the PlayStation Store right now and costs just £0.99. Judging by the trailer, it looks like students of Sheffield Hallam University have been inspired by the classic block-shifting puzzler Tetris as players attempt to manipulate blocks and fit them into holes in the ground in order to rebuild the land.
"This is the first game in the world to be released for the PlayStation 4 made entirely by a team of undergraduate students, so it’s a real achievement for the team," said studio manager Dr. Jake Habgood.
