Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game Review (PS5) – Navigating the Tranquil Chaos

Navigating The Muddy Outdoors

Expeditions excels in providing a tranquil gaming experience, making it an ideal choice for those looking to unwind from the stresses of everyday life.

The game’s focus on exploration and strategic manoeuvring in challenging terrains offers a serene escape, allowing players to immerse themselves in the therapeutic challenge of navigating muddy landscapes.

Players will notice upon starting the game that the visuals are up to par with the standards of Next-Gen Hardware. Depth of field and fidelity extend far to express the rough terrains that anticipate your exploration, despite occasional texture hiccups.

In addition to the vibrant visuals, the physics presented in this game are intricately designed. All praise is due to the developers for fine-tuning the physics of vehicles as they interact with different terrains to allow Players to feel the roughness as they drive.

You’ll be tasked to navigate through the rough rocky hills, murky waters, and muddy terrains. Through these challenging landscapes, you must confine within the detailed vehicle control system, offering players the ability to adjust gear, drivetrain, terrain control, tire pressure, and gas.

Understanding how your vehicle works, and tuning it to traverse and navigate gives players a great sense of accomplishment as they overcome every rocky hurdle presented to them.

The inclusion of a garage with extensive customization options provides players with a sense of control and freedom in tailoring their trucks to meet the demands of challenging missions.

Catering specifically to truck and mud runner enthusiasts, Expeditions offers a diverse range of vehicles, each meticulously designed for optimal performance in various terrains.

The game’s attention to realism and control customization allows players to fine-tune their vehicles, enhancing the overall experience for those who revel in the intricacies of off-road driving.

With how much thought, patience, and relaxation goes into this experience, Players who have experienced Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding will find great appreciation for what Expeditions has accomplished within its gameplay.

Loads Of Content, Loads Of Fun

The game’s inclusion of side missions adds depth to the exploration, rewarding players with cash, parts, gear, and unlocks, incentivizing players to engage in missions and explore the terrains presented to them.

As players explore during expeditions, drivers will have an arsenal of tools at their disposal to assist them in navigating the treacherous terrains.

There’s the winch that assists you in navigating uphill or getting yourself out of a bad spot, metal detectors unearth valuable items, drones to oversee the landscape and plan your route, and binoculars to highlight points of interest, adding them to your map.

Every tool enhances the gameplay, adding layers of strategy to the missions. These tools contribute to the overall immersion and enjoyment of the exploration process. You’ll always have to think on your toes and plan out your route to reach your destinations.

While the review acknowledges the absence of co-op functionality at the time of writing, the potential for an engaging multiplayer experience with friends is anticipated.

The prospect of sharing the relaxation and the thrills through challenging terrains adds a layer of enjoyment that could elevate the overall experience.

Trees, The Bane To Your Existence

Expeditions is not without its flaws. The physics, although in-depth, can be truly unforgiving. Many times you will be driving your truck and at any moment, you may get stuck behind a rock, in shallow water, or toppled over because of a hill. Trust me, this is going to happen a lot, especially if you are halted on your journey due to a tree.

Needless to say, give trees in this game a wide birth. If you come close to a tree, the truck will be caught onto its branch. Once that happens, it’s over for you.

Despite the many tools to assist you in navigating through the terrain, there is nothing you can do should you get caught in a tree. No winches, no anchors, no car jacks, nothing can help you. You are required to recover your Truck at the closest camp.

Unfortunately, these recovery spots can be very far from your objective at times, hurting the pacing of missions drastically. Most of our playtime was spent recovering our vehicles and driving back to the path of our objectives, delaying completing missions promptly.

It most certainly doesn’t help the discrepancy between the powerful trucks and their seemingly slow speeds, which can detract from the overall thrill of the experience, and hurt the pacing.

Additionally, the inability to multitask while using certain tools and the delayed introduction of essential tools during later missions continue to disrupt the pacing and learning curve.

With a missed opportunity to take advantage of the Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers on PS5 to express the resistance and rough terrains of the muddy mountains; this all left me yearning for more out of this experience.

In Conclusion

Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game succeeds in delivering a unique and calming experience for truck and mud-running enthusiasts. Expressing great visual fidelity, attention to intricate vehicle control, customization, and diverse tools, Expeditions offers an immersive gameplay experience.

Despite notable flaws in physics and pacing, the game’s potential for co-op enjoyment and the overall relaxation it provides warrants a commendable purchase for fans of the genre.

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is out now for PS5, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
