Halo: Campaign Evolved PS5 Review. Developed by Halo Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios, Halo: Campaign Evolved needs little introduction. Originally released in 2001, it helped define the Xbox brand, changed expectations for console shooters and introduced players to one of gaming’s most recognisable heroes in Master Chief.
Now, more than two decades later, Halo: Campaign Evolved brings that legendary first adventure to PS5 for the first time. Seeing one of Xbox’s defining franchises arrive on a PlayStation console is still a fascinating moment, but this is more than simply a chance for another audience to experience a classic.

Campaign Evolved takes the foundations of that original adventure and expands upon them with new additions, modern improvements and ideas inspired by the games that followed. The challenge with remaking something as beloved as Halo is knowing what deserves to be preserved and what can be changed, but this version understands that the magic was never just nostalgia. It was always the gameplay.
While some elements still show their age, Halo: Campaign Evolved proves that a brilliant foundation can remain incredibly strong decades later. The biggest success of Campaign Evolved is that it understands why Halo worked in the first place. The combat remains the centrepiece, and the changes made here enhance the experience rather than replacing what made the original so enjoyable.
The expanded arsenal is one of the most noticeable additions. Bringing weapons from later Halo entries into the campaign gives returning players new ways to approach familiar encounters, while newcomers get a more complete look at how the series eventually evolved. It changes the rhythm of certain battles, but it still feels unmistakably like Halo.
Glorious Gunplay
That balance is important because the sandbox remains the star of the show. Weapons feel distinct, encounters encourage experimentation and the two-weapon limit forces you to make decisions instead of carrying an answer for every situation. Halo works because it gives players the freedom to create their own solutions.
The enemy design also remains one of the campaign’s biggest strengths. Grunts create chaos, Jackals force you to consider your positioning and Elites can completely change the pace of a fight. Even now, Halo understands how to create memorable encounters because the player is always actively involved.
Campaign Evolved does not need to reinvent Halo. It simply needs to remind players why the formula worked so well in the first place.
Better Together
The biggest highlight of my playthrough came from experiencing the entire campaign with a friend. Co-op campaigns have become increasingly rare, and Halo: Campaign Evolved is a great reminder of why they deserve to make a comeback.
There is something special about experiencing a full adventure together. Difficult encounters become shared challenges, unexpected moments become memories and even quieter sections of the campaign feel more enjoyable when you are working through them with someone else.
Playing this way brought back that same feeling of sitting beside friends and working through split-screen campaigns years ago. Even without that exact setup, Halo still captures the sense of teamwork and chaos that made those experiences so special.
Beautiful Locales Worth Exploring
Campaign Evolved also gives returning players more reasons to revisit the ring. The addition of Skulls encourages exploration and rewards those willing to search beyond the obvious path. They feel like genuine secrets rather than another list of collectibles designed simply to extend the playtime.
They also fit naturally into Halo’s design philosophy. The campaign has always been at its best when it gives players room to experiment, and these additions encourage another run through familiar missions with a different approach.
The visual overhaul is another major improvement. Halo has always had a distinct atmosphere, and Campaign Evolved enhances that without losing the identity of the original. The environments feel more detailed, the lighting adds more impact and stepping onto the ring still carries that same sense of scale.
Oh Dear..
Not everything has landed perfectly, though. Beyond some design choices that naturally reflect Halo’s age, I also encountered a handful of technical hiccups throughout my playthrough. The most memorable saw my Spartan disappear into the void between the world and whatever comes after it, leaving my co-op partner trying to guide me into the ocean so I could die and respawn. That worked, but I returned underneath the map instead, meaning we had to repeat the whole process before everything finally corrected itself.
Playing with a friend turned what could have been an infuriating bug into one of the funniest moments of the entire campaign. Had I been playing alone, I suspect it would have been a very different story. Thankfully, issues like this were few and far between, and they never took away from just how much fun I was having throughout the adventure.
The biggest disappointment is the lack of multiplayer. After finishing the campaign with a friend, it feels strange not having the option to continue into the competitive side of Halo. The campaign itself remains excellent, but that missing piece stops Campaign Evolved from feeling like the complete package.
Classic Chaos
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a fascinating release because it represents both a return to the past and a new beginning. It marks Master Chief’s first major adventure on PS5, allowing a completely new audience to experience one of gaming’s most influential campaigns.
The remake is not without its issues. The missing multiplayer, occasional bugs and some dated design choices prevent it from reaching perfection, but the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses. Fantastic combat, smart additions and excellent co-op make this a campaign that remains incredibly easy to recommend.
More importantly, Campaign Evolved proves that Halo’s appeal was never just about nostalgia. The foundation was always strong, and this remake shows that great design can still shine decades later. Even on PlayStation.
