Turtle Beach Atlas 200 Headset Review – A Punchy Wired Headset That Delivers Ample Bang For Your Buck

turtle beach atlas 200 headset review

For the longest time Turtle Beach has commanded an impressive range of wireless headsets. Running the gamut from low to high end performance profiles and just about everything in-between, the longtime accessories manufacturer always had something for the discerning player no matter their budget. Now, off the back of its roundly successful wireless range, Turtle Beach is starting to swim once more in the waters of wired headsets and if the Turtle Beach Atlas 200 headset is any indication, then the company is certainly on track to mirror its success there, too.

Sound Quality & Value

Right off the bat, you’ve got a wired headset here that retails for $59.99/£49.99 and what it obviously lacks in wireless features (d’oh), it more than makes up for in raw specifications and form factor – which I’ll get to shortly.

First off though, in terms of sound quality and features, the Turtle Beach Atlas 200 headset gives a decent account of itself. The 50mm Nanoclear Drivers are the same sound drivers which feature in Turtle Beach’s Stealth Gen 3 wireless series of headsets, and provides the sort of impactful sound, bass and tone one might expect from a much higher tier of headset.

In sticking with the sound performance of the Atlas 200, Turtle Beach’s latest wired headset also boasts full 3D sound compatibility in line with the PS5 and PS5 Pro’s Tempest 3D processor. This means that in supported titles you’ll get the full swathe of 3D sound functionality such as the sound of rain drops pattering around you in the superb Astro Bot, for example.

Sadly, those folks looking for the AI noise cancelling and Superhuman Hearing technology seen in Turtle Beach’s more expensive Stealth branded headsets, might well be disappointed here, as neither feature in the Atlas 200 wired headset. That said, this probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given the Atlas 200‘s relatively humble and ultimately pleasing low-end price point. You get what you pay for essentially, and while the Atlas 200 might lack those sorts of high end features, it nonetheless provides a good account itself otherwise from a performance standpoint and arguably provides a compelling entry point for wired headset users looking to embrace a punchy set of audio features.

Form Factor, Comfort & Overall Design

Before you even hoist the ultra-lightweight Turtle Beach Atlas 200 headset atop your noggin, the unit itself does cut something of a striking appearance. An impressive looking package that seems to be equal parts plastic, electronics and fabric, it’s arguably one of the most intriguing looking material hybrid accessories I think I have ever seen. Providing the Atlas 200 with its arch is a mesh of spongy fabric which helps to utterly soften the impact of the plastic frame underneath all the while allowing the unit to sit comfortably on your head, the fabric itself terminates on each side where the official PlayStation logo can be found on the blue fabric located on either side of the headset (this is an officially licensed PlayStation product, after all).

If we look beyond the fabric vectors of the Atlas 200 headset, the plastic housing around the headphone speakers feels solid and also appropriately versatile to boot, even if the protruding microphone does feel a little more flimsy than I hoped, but the flip-to-mute functionality is which allows you to simply move the mic up and out of the way when you’re not using it, remains a super useful feature to have. Being a wired only headset, the Atlas 200 neatly sidesteps having many of the buttons and dials that you might normally expect to find on its wireless equivalent. Instead, what you actually get is just a single, easy to locate volume dial comfortably nestled on the underside of the left side of the headset – and that’s your lot. Simple, easy to use and effective.

Once you’re wearing the headset itself, comfort is certainly the order of the day here as the mesh fabric does indeed make the arch feel a lot softer on the skull than it otherwise would, while the memory foam cushion also provides the kind of softness you would want from a headset that might very well end up in use for a good few hours. Elsewhere, the 3.5mm connection to the DualSense controller fits in snuggly and doesn’t wobble or otherwise move about during gameplay or when you’re waving the controller around like a madman (cough), but if anything, my own complaint about the headset from a form factor and comfort perspective, albeit a minor one, concerns how it works when using the PlayStation VR2 headset.

Final Words

Changing things up somewhat from the manufacturers previously wireless-centric product offering, the Turtle Beach Atlas 200 most certainly represents a compelling proposition for folks looking for a wired headset toward the lower end of the cost scale. With a potent set of audio features and a pleasing design that also feels roundly comfortable for the most part, the Turtle Beach Atlas 200 headset is an easy recommendation for anybody on the lookout for a quality wired headset to be used with their PS4, PS5 or PS5 Pro console.
