40GB PS3 to grace India this December

Posted on November 17th, 2007 at 05:11 EDT

In an interview with GameGuru.in, Atindriya Bose, Country Manager of Sony Computer Entertainment India stated that the firm plans to launch the 40GB PS3 in the region this December.

"We are currently selling the 60GB PS3, the 40GB PS3 has been launched in many of the European markets, it's just a logistics issue that we might have around one, one and a half month delay," he said.

"By the time we hit December, you will have the 40GB PS3 in the [Indian] market at a price point that matches the European market." Later in the interview, Bose also stated that Sony may look at launching a PS3 starter pack in India, but there is nothing official at this time.

With a cheaper PS3 console available, we may see sales increase in India much like we did in EU and the US.

Which region is India part of? I don't hear much about India and some of the smaller asian market.

$399 = 15656.76 Rupees

Average Per Capita GDP in India = $3,800 (149112 Rupees)

So a PS3 would be 10% of the average family's yearly income.

Although it's great that the PS3 is spreading to many markets, I don't believe South East Asia will rival other markets, despite dwarfing them in terms of population.

No actually the average per capita income is that low because there is about 80% of a lower class in India that lives in poverty.  There is another 2% that represents the small middle class.  Then there is the 18% upper classes that owns or has shares in those big factories that export to other countries like the US.  These people would be millionaires in the US. These people can easily afford PS3 all the original games they want.  And, 18% of a populatio of > 1 billion is alot of people.

exactly streetball! do the math.....that is millions of consoles sold. not just consoles but blu-ray too. these people have money to afford the best...and the ps3 is the best of both worlds. we are talking easily 18-20 million people. if the ps3 sales to just 10% of the 18% that can afford it that is still 2 million consoles.....now that is a big deal don't you think....alot of people on here really need to shut up. they make stupid comments without thinking at all. sony pays people millions of dollars a year to make these decisions...you think they don't think about this stuff. my god i would hate to be teaching your economics and world business classes to you idiots.....you can't even see past your own main street to see the world market.

What I had always wanted, that Sony should also involve as many countries as possible where they supply their consoles so taht their presence will be felt world wide. They dont have to ship millions of consoles in India or even to some African caountries, just some hunfreds of them, like 150-250 consoles in order to c how things turn out.Who knows the rejected stone can turn out to be the pillar of the house. So Sony shouldn't minimize any market.

As long as there is no piracy for ps3,it won't sell in South Asia,at least not to the masses.

@ davin_g

Dude seriously, you really need to get laid. Maybe that'll help you calm down. Streetbball does make a very valid arguement, and I agree with his statement about the skewed per capita GDP. Yes the PS3 will sell in India, but it will never rival other markets. I'm Indian, and I've visited the country, video games do not garner a large user base. The PS3 may make it's way into homes as an affordable Blu-Ray player, (Once Blu-Rays start being pirated haha), but from a purely gaming perspective, Indian demographics do not bode well for a successfull gaming industry venture at this time. Oh and by the way, 18% of 1 Billion is 180 Million, although that does assist your arguement, it also shows you can't do math. Biatch...
