Blu-ray holds off tough storm by HD-DVD

Posted on November 17th, 2007 at 05:25 EDT

Last week we reported that the Blu-ray format was seriously handing it to HD-DVD. In the week ending November 4, HD-DVD only featured 1 title, Transformers, in the top 10 high-def movie sales. The rest was dominated by 9 Blu-ray titles. This week, HD-DVD made a bit of a move on Blu-ray, but nothing tough enough to even leave a scratch.

In the week ended November 11, Blu-ray and HD DVD sales compassion (movie titles) shows that Blu-ray clearly succeeded over HD-DVD by having 65% of the high-def titles being sold on the Blu-ray format verses HD-DVD, which had 35%.

1. Ratatouille -- Blu-ray
2. Spider-Man 3 – Blu-ray
3. Cars – Blu-ray
4. Transformers – HD DVD
5. I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry – HD DVD
6. Spider-Man The High Definition Trilogy – Blu-ray
7. Pixar Short Films Collection Vol. 1 – Blu-ray
8. Knocked Up – HD DVD
9. 300 – Blu-ray
10. Meet the Robinsons – Blu-ray

So while HD DVD sales have received a small boost, Blu-ray continues to hold the top spot. Check back next week for more Blu-ray statistics.

I admit I do like to buy blu-ray movies but only for the epic type films or good computer generated graphics. What the *&^% are people buying movies like "..chuck and larry" or "knocked up" on high def!!!!???? LMAO I'm imagining someone actually saying..."whoa I gotta see that in High Def!!" However this proves that High Def is here to stay. Go Blu-Ray!!!!

What surprises me is that with figures like this week in and week out, how is it that other companies continue to consider HD-DVD as a viable candidate to win the HD war? I get that there are more HD-DVD stand-alone players than stand-alone Blu-Ray players but if that's so why don't movie sales reflect that? Could all the braindead PS3 owners that don't know they have a Blu-Ray player in their $500 console finally smelling the coffee? The fact that Transformers was only #4 on the list doesn't bode well (considering it was a better movie than Spider-Man 3 and that's coming from a die-hard Spidey fan). Blu-Ray FTW!!!!

man seriously just knowing the thought if transformers were to be on blu-ray it would just settle everything becuz i am pretty sure that many ppl would pick tht for the #1 movie for "higher-def" especially for all the effects! i am pretty sure if that were to happen, blu-ray sales would rise even more then now....but sum people are 2 ignorant and just ignore the fact tht HD-DVD is nothing compared to blu-ray!!!

It's always good to hear there's some "compassion" for the sales comparisons.

the way i see it blu ray will continue to dominate this format war no matter the outcome, for instance new line cinema isnt releasing a single title on HD-DVD until late spring, so no rush hour 3 for them until then, yeah shreck is good and so is bourne but we got many more films than they do. we got pirates of the carribean dec 4 and live free or die hard which just hit stores, and the die hard collection on nov 20 if you want that instead, RE extiction hitting shelves jan 1, gone baby gone in feb 12, and saw 4 sometime early next year, superbad in dec 4 ect, my point here is blu ray has more exclusive content, if sony wanted to end this today than they would simply drop the prices of regular stand players to $200 and thats it.

They need to keep releasing more titles as well as special trilogy releases.

Funky Munky...although someone really ought to start spellchecking Mr Jacksons posts before they go live..."In the week ended November 11, Blu-ray and HD DVD sales compassion" should actually read "In the week endING November 11, Blu-ray and HD DVD sales compARISON "

Sheesh...sloppy sloppy sloppy...
