Call of Duty 4 has sold nearly 14 million, says Activision

Activision Blizzard revealed during the company’s latest quarterly earnings call yesterday that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has shifted close to 14 million units globally since its launch in November 2007.
According to company president and CEO Mike Griffith, the upcoming sequel, Modern Warfare 2, has already drummed up more pre-orders than any other Activision title to date. Elsewhere, Griffith also reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting the CoD franchise via map packs and various other downloadable content.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is due for release on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in November 2009. Stay tuned for more coverage on the game here at PSU in the coming months.

I disliked Call of Duty 4. It just didn't appeal to me. I lean more towards the arcade shooters like Resistance and Battlefield.

I bought CoD4 on day 1, I still play it today, it still has a lot of the bugs that it had when it was first released but apart from that I see no reason to hate it.
What games to do you propose that are better?
@5 Resistance 1 and 2 were rubbish games, over hyped trash in my opinion, 1 was the lesser of two evils which I why I kept my copy for about a month rather than the 2nd which went back the following week.
BF BC was awesome, I too still play that online, I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel.

COD4 is a great game, especialy for me, because at the time of release I was the only one out of my friends that had a PS3. Twice a week my friends come over my house and we play 4 player split screen which is rare that a game has a split player feature. Now all my friends has a PS3, but now with that flying cheat code it just makes it not fun anymore. I hope in the new one they fix some issues to make it more enjoyable game. My personal list are...
1. Better servers. 2. No glitching or Cheats codes. 3. No Hostended Game. 4. Longer One player Game. 5. More Map Packs in the future, take a lesson from "World at War" and "Kill Zone".
6. Please make it where youn mute players during match setup, so you dont have hear bad singing, feedback or someone playing there radio to loud.

@..9....you obviously like gettin ripped off, more map packs...? come on, surely with a 50gb blu ray disc they should be able to put around 20-30 maps on the disc from the start instead of payin more money to A-CON.VISION further down the line?

all i can say they better have dedicated servers for modern warfare 2this time! they make so much money out of us, at least have dedicated servers so u dont so many online problems like bad lag,host quit game, bad connections etc. just look at battlefield 1943 not once have i encountered any problems online

@ 13, i agree....COD4 is a great game, but there's still no need to sell map packs after release when the ps3 has 50gb discs.

@2&3: You say the game sucks but the general consensus says otherwise. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinions... but remember that sometimes those opinions mean squat... this is one of those times.
Most likely you're just one of those people that enjoys Halo/Resistance games instead and the problem is we're talking about an entire different type of FPS. One is based more on realism and the other is based on fake weapons and the such.

Cod4 is stll awesome i got it day1 still fun today, the game does have alot of glitch though they should fix it in modern warfare 2

@11(and the like) Are you guys really so braindead? The BLU-RAY disks can indeed hold a lot of maps, but do you think they should wait untill all their ideas are used up for the levels and skins before releasing the game? No! They put the game out, and continue making levels after as well. They could release them for free, like for PC packs in general, but that's another thing...

Not surprised, COD4 was a great game, and I'll get COD:MW only because I know everyone else will, and it'll have coop. It's not going to be my favorite game, and it's VERY over hyped, but I'm sure it'll be great and everyone else will get it too. Most the people who I know in real life who are on my friends list pretty much play CoD (this is annoying and is why most all of my PSN friends were met when playing).

call of duty 4 is one of the most over rated games of all time.
dont get me wrong, its a decent game, but people just bow down and worship it and i have put in some time to play it but it was nothing more then a decent shooter.
for you morons who are saying "you just post this for attention", ummmmm....im not. I just feel with the sequel coming out and all of the fans saying "MW2 = best game of all time confirmed" its rediculous. the first one was big because before it there wasnt a game with such deep online (for a FPS), but now that it has been done, i dont think the sequal will be anything but a new campaign, new guns and maps and thats it. no huge new features that push the genre. it will be a good game, but holy He1l people, this game is getting too much hype.
at least modern warfare got rid of some of the halo craze.

i dont understand why people play this game so much its like anyother shooter ive played .......all the older call of duties are the same but nobody plays that its no different to anyother game i say battlefield is much better and resistance...........HALO SMASHES IT
