Does Mass Effect have a future on PS3?

This month will garnish what is widely regarded as a 2007 Game of the Year candidate. Developed by Bioware, Mass Effect is said to be a spectacular new vision of the future set in a bright universe, with a dark secret. What made this game truly special, at-least to Microsoft is that Bioware had plans to develop this title as an exclusive trilogy with all three games spanning the life span of the Xbox 360 console.

To Microsoft, Mass Effect was, and still possibly is, the bread and butter for the Xbox 360, especially since the Halo trilogy has came to a successful end. However, recent industry transactions have created clouds of doubt over Mass Effect and it’s future of the IP still staying 100% exclusive to the Xbox 360. This could lead to the possibility of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 3 coming to the PlayStation 3 console in the future.

The day was October 11th, 2007 when it all went down. Videogames giant, Electronic Arts, purchased the holding company that owns Bioware and Pandemic for USD 800 million.

"We are truly excited by John Riccitiello's new vision for EA," said Ray Muzyka, Co-founder and CEO of BioWare Corp. in a news release Thursday. "This vision is consistent with BioWare's focus on crafting the highest quality story-driven games in the world. It will enable us to further the careers of the passionate, creative and hard working teams at BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Austin."

Now, let us back up for a moment here and comprehend what is going on. Everyone who has followed the gaming industry for at-least the past five years or so would tell you that Electronic Arts is not akin to console specific games. Indeed, they even came out and publicly stated that they are for one universal gaming console, eliminating the three-way or sometimes two-way console wars t hat we are all used to today.

"We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible," EA's Gerhard Florin said to BBC News.

This means that they like to share their creations and not have it confined to just one demographic. Just take a look at their track record as most, if not all, of the Electronic Arts games from 2001 to present was multiplatform. The last time Electronic Arts decided not to release a major game on a specific platform was in 1999 with the Sega Dreamcast. Electronic Arts did not believe that the lifespan of the Dreamcast would last that long and was not worth putting time and effort into; hence, they withheld Madden 2000 from the console. Since then, EA has made it their best efforts to have their games developed on as many platforms as possible, from PS3, to PC, to Mobile phones. Let us not forget now, Electronic Arts is an industry giant that is constantly seeking profit.

Now with that out of the way, it is pretty apparent that given the opportunity, Electronic Arts will not withhold any game back from any console unless there is a clear definitive reason. Back to Bioware and Mass Effect, which is where the real meat is. As previously stated, Mass Effect was planned as an exclusive trilogy for the Xbox 360, but now given the fact that EA now owns Bioware, Electronic Arts, not Microsoft will publish and distribute Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3.

Also as previously stated, Electronic Arts does not play nice to console exclusives and if there is a profit to be made, best believe EA will capitalize on it. Enter the PlayStation 3 console with its powerful Cell technology and Blu-ray format, which you may remember was actually the original platform to base the series on, until BioWare opted to move the project over to Microsoft’s console due to lack of development kits from Sony.

When asked if Mass Effect will continue to be an Xbox 360 exclusive after the EA buyout, Greg Zeschuk CEO and Co-Owner of Bioware, had this to say:

”We can't predict the future. We'll see what happens. The key thing is we're making a trilogy of Mass ... (continued on next page)

Sounds interesting...I'm no big fan of RPG's but this one is a Must-Buy for 360-owners. Looks pretty neat and it will boost sales for sure. But still we've got FFXIII and FF Versus XIII so I'm cool with the fact its a 360 exclusive by now. How can we possibly ask for more once Final Fantasy is released (in the far future >.<)

Totally agree Perishing_Mind.  FFXIII will negate any interest in Mass Effect on the PS3.  Not saying that ME wouldn't be fun to play on Sony's console, but I'd rather look into FFXIII.  Besides, there's no way that ME 1 will be on the PS3 (Microsoft published it so they probably retain some kind of rights), and if I can't learn about the beginning of the story, I don't want to jump into ME 2 and not know what's going on.

After looking at gameplay I cannot say I am thrilled about the title. The story does look involving though.

As sson EA touches anything, it becomes bad. EA simply can't make good games, and it started right after BF2, with the exception of BF 2142.

Wow, when PSU puts it that way. EA sounds like some kind of savior for multiplatforms. Gives off the motto of EA loves all consoles and they're the denizens to close the gap between this silly Console War. Have I gone mad?! EA= GOOD?!

Let MS have it, I'd rather have no Mass Effect than another garbage port.

I'm going to jumpt to the reply form here and just say "No" without reading the article. Now I'm going to go back and actually read it to see what they say. lets see if out answers match. SHALL WE?

Now after reading I can safely say, "I was right"  While I can apprciate the writter's ability to find microscopic loop holes in all the coporate doublespeak the plain cold hard fact is, MS got a hold of this game for the first title and will likely throw huge gobs of cash at EA to lock down the game's next two installments because frankly without Halo they dont HAVE anything else worth a damn. The next two games might not be published by MS but that just means that the first title's rights becaome much harder to put on PS3 because EA can't lay claim to it.

I predict this. MassE will make it to PC, because that is the closest thing to this ridiculous "single system" that EA has been wanting, Frankly I'd expct them to pull back from consoles a little more just to deal with PC as much as possible under the Games for Windows Brand (owned by M$) which would allow them to get around the lock M$ has on the first game. Now should EA realize the error of their ways and want to play fair for once... (c'mon, stop launghing I'm trying to makea point here!) What could happen is they'd wait until the entire trilogy is done and release the whole game on a single BLuRay disk for the PS3... but that's years from now and while it's a nice thought it's highly unlikly that M$ wil let the title go beyond the 36* and GFW environments  especially when Bioware themselves seemed dead set on keeping it on one platform.

The deck was stacked against the PS3 in regards to this game from what I can tell, best not to even give it a second thought anymore.

In a way I agree with Rugburn. But on the other hand, it would definitely burn MS to have an exclusive got multiplat. It would be nice to see something like that go Sony's way for sure. I think I would buy it if it came over for that reason. Once reviews came out of course hehehe Wouldn't want to get it only for it to be as rough as Lair :D

FF and ME are completely different styles of games. ME is more like KOTAR which when I played it on PC just felt like a MMORPG without the online multiplayer. While FF wiil always be FF even with slightly less turnbased action the feeling you get playing an FF game will always be there. And each of thse games are going to appeal to that type of gamer. I like JPRGs so I'll love FF, I'm not super thrilled about western RPGs or even MMORPGs so I'd probably get tired of MassE. I never bought Oblivion for much the same reason.

It's all going to be about what you like and Playstation's supporters have always been more facinated with Japanese style games.

M$ can keep this. All i see here is another over hyped, run of the mill, slightly above average game that involves shooting aliens... again.... which will probably get a 9.5 from every site out here as well as start another wave of 360 owns PS3 propaganda. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is unimpressed here. Give me Uncharted and Haze.

lol tom ass, if haze and uncharted was on 360 u would say they was hyped and if mass effect was on 360 u would say it was great.

    # 2 and 3 will be on the ps3, if by that time the ps3 has a bigger user base, because all EA cares about is money.

  25. swordfish64 | Swordfish64

    • 5:52pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

Uncharted and Haze couldn't fit on M$ disc format. ME looks meh to me, another overhyped overrated game, just like oblivion which I though was a definition of boring. It seems to me that M$ games are consistently overrated, even ones like Oblivion in which the better more complete version happens to be on the PS3, yet the PS3 version gets a .1 lower rating by some sites. It's almost as if M$ games are being graded on a curve. I'll stick with ps3 exclusives like ratchet and clank and uncharted which have kicked off the training wheels of DVD and are showing undeniable superiority in audio, graphics, animations, gameplay, physics, and AI, not last gen gameplay, physics, ai with a hi-def gloss.

    • 6:12pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

ryoma... i stand by words. i'm tired of shooting aliens. my opinion not yours. this game is over hyped because its on 360. 360 is all hype. again ... just my opinions. not yours. and finally i can't wait for haze and uncharted. they look fun. just my opinion though. and if massive defect was on ps3 i would not buy it because like i said before i'm tired of shooting aliens.

I will not be surprised if it does happen, EA is notorious for making mulitplat games as well as milking their franchises like some cow. :/ While I think its good for a the PS3, again it can be a sub par port with 'issues' that would make it look underrated to its 360 counterpart.

This is definatly a possibility i hope mass effect 2 or 3 comes to ps3. The game sounds like its suppose to be big? Anyways, microsoft has no exclusives left. This game is there one game that can help them, but even then it's one game. Sony has plenty of exclusives, and their all AAA.

When microsft makes a game it's bad, real bad. EX.)  crackdown and shadowrun.

So if sony were to snatch this 360 exclusive, microsoft would be in big trouble. Also i want to add that EPIC ( makers or gears of war) are really happy with the ps3.

Gears of War 2 on ps3 anyone??????

Totally agree 100% with Alpha2. Mass Effect was brought as an exclusive by Microsoft not as a timed exclusive but as a complete and utter 110% for ever and a day exlcusive!!! Electronic Arts can want to release it on as many systems as they want including mobile phones BUT I bet it'll cost them an awful lot of money to wriggle out of the exlcusivity contract Microsoft have with BioWare. I'd love to see the game on PS3 but it isn't going to happen. You can leap on semantics all you like but the reality is they haven't annouced it for the PS3 and I don't expect them too. EVER.

Realtionships that alter depending on how you talk to people and interact with them, you can fall in love, create your own character with the DEEP character creation. It would be awesome if it came out on ps3.

I don't want to diss the article writer but it seems to me that this a waste of time, where's the interest in having and playing this trilogy when you can't play the 1st one? i'd rather know how some of the games that are coming out for ps3 are in terms of development instead of wasting my time with this, even if this game gets to be the goty, at the rate of development that some games are and with launch dates coming rapidly any game can be the game of the year, these are all suppositions and nothing else, hemay be the ceo of his azz but EA still pwns him, and the final word belongs to them...with M$ throwing some $ on the side this franchise may stay exclusive to them, we all know how it works, EA is looking for profit and M$ has it's ways of making things work out for them...

Doubt this will come to PS3, the first one is an exclusive...not might be...it is. I'm sure the next two will be aswell. I'm sure MS still has a say in the making of the game aswell, since MS was publishing it before EA bought them and...oh yeh Peter Moore works for EA now....should have mentioned that too. Who ever said ...sorry FPS + RPG doesnt work....are you on crack? Look at Oblivion and Dark Messiah!!!  Yes that was a FPS Action RPG that won mannnny awards. With the exploration, character development, story, and conversations....Mass Effect is sure to come down as Game of the Year.
