Famitsu: PSP on top in Japan, PS3 falls even further

We've got good news and bad news, O disciples of PlayStation. Let's start with the bad news: the PlayStation 3 has continued its downward sales slide in Japan for the week ending October 17, according to Famitsu estimates, with 1,200 sales between it and the marginally more successful Xbox 360.

Now for the good news: the PlayStation Portable has outsold every other platform combined almost twice over. The bulk of that figure can be attributed to the PSP-3000, Sony's latest handheld revamp, which walked away with over 140,000 sales in the first four days of its life despite issues with the redesigned screen.

Here are Famitsu's predictions in full:

PSP - 156,000
DS Lite - 34,000
Wii - 25,000
PS2 - 7,800
360 - 6,000
PS3 - 4,800

Good news about the PSP. PS3 though...slowly sinking :/ Hopefully the Japanese sales will pick up 25th December when Sony and Level 5 release White Knight Chronicles.

Great news for PSP, though to be expected with the 3000 model. But PS3? OUCH!

Japanese seem to hate Hd consoles, both X360 numbers and Ps3 numbers are horible.

Sony need to get some of them good games out, to save the PLAYSTATION3 in Japan. I think they should probably try to get some RPG's announced. Japanese gamers love RPG's.

Japaneses seems to buy stuff late. Like when psp was released "no one" bought it. But then suddenly when monster hunter was released psp tops charts. :D
I expect that ps3 and xbox360 will sell much more after they are "old" stuff. Wii is already count as old hardware so it sells. ;D

I wonder if the PSP sales plummet now because of the problems with the new screen?

i totally agree w/u bro.. i think its cuz their eyes are photosensitive to true HD vision.

their know for having seazures in SD tv's but imagine wut it would do to them in hi-def rez.. AHHHH!! lol.

anywho, they need to get with the program and relize this is the nex-gen future and since them bieng the leading center of technology these days,it would be sad to see that the rest of the world is a head of them in their own field.

Yo like what up all the stereotypes against the Japanese man.

Just like over here they have the right to choose what they buy man.

One reason the PS3 ain't even doing so well is cause of the fact the price still, and the games there aren't any variety.

You guys make it seem like HD gaming is great I've played both 360 and PS3 so far, and they really ain't that different from the PS2. Yeah it got the graphics, but the only games that really benefit are games like the sports games, and racing games. Also the Extreme Sports.

It should be obvious to everyone why the PS3 isn't selling a lot is beacuse of the price...Plain & simple. It's not because there not into the HD gaming or because lack of games that much. It's just the price is higher then the other systems.

     @18

Yeah, Price is probably one of the most signifigant reasons. Game selection is another though. I could see the Japanese buying LBP, but not R2 or any of the other exclusives coming in the near future. Most of the others that would be interesting to them are also on 360, and when the 360 is cheaper, and when the product is often better on the 360, the ps3 doesn't make sense. Not to mention the 360 just recently got ahold of tekken 6, and has gained exclusivity on all the good rpgs(also probably a huge factor). I hope White Knight is good, but its not nearly enough. Actually, after LBP, R2, and WKC, I don't see this system offering me anything I can't get elsewhere, and like I mentioned before, the 360 often has the superior version of multi-platform games. I could care less about home at this point, and it doesn't look like gt5 is ever going to make it to market. Who knows, that might go 360 as well?

Didnt 360 just get infinite undiscovery and last remnant or something. As Sony FINALLY begins to release RPGs those sales will change drastically. Remember that FFXIII is still a PS3 exclusive in Japan

    >the PlayStation 3 has continued its downward sales slide in Japan

Because many stores are sold out of the 40 GB in Japan with the 80 GB coming in soon.

  26. Atoris

    • 9:39am BST - October 23rd, 2008

I believe that PS3 sales arent high in Japan at the moment is due to the fact that at Otober 30th the new bundles of 80gb with LBP will be coming out. I am assuming that people are waiting for that one and is not buying the current version of PS3. Another wrong with PS3 is that it really dont have a lot of JRPGs. A lot of my friends are considering buying a XBOX 360 because of Star Ocean 4 and Invinite Indiscoveries and The Last Remnant. If Sony were able to get more JRPGs then things might be a little more different. Its sad that Sony didnt get Tales of Vesperia or Invinite Indiscoveries....  Oh, and I do live in Tokyo.

    • 10:11am BST - October 23rd, 2008

@23 PS2= Cheaper than PS3, and you can buy atleast if not more than like 15 games for it.

Also Sony has basically all, but lost what really made them who they are their RPG's. Unless Sony can get these guys to make their games with the PS3 in mind first that's the only way their going to gain back any lost ground.
