According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, millions are watching movies on their PS3s, but an HD DVD expert claims that this is untrue and that many gamers aren't even aware that their console can play HD movies.
Olivier Van Wynendaele, spokesman for the HD DVD Promotion Group, made the claims during an exclusive interview with Tech.co.uk.
He says, according to indepedent research figures, that 60 per cent of game consoles owners don't know they can play movies - either DVD or Blu-ray - on their PS3.
Furthermore, of the remaining 40 per cent, Van Wynendaele says that just 13 per cent are actually using their games console as a player.
With the quality of games recently released on PS3, can you really blame gamers for wanting to play GAMES on their GAMES consoles though?
Add to that the relatively high price of Blu-Ray/HD DVDs and it's no wonder that many are not that bothered about watching movies through their PS3.
Van Wynendaele also added that the same applies to owners of Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Source: PS3 News

Olivier Van Wynendaele can kiss my a**. I'm tired of these so called "experts" claiming the SAME piece of information. When ever they talk about this, its the same statistic... nothing else to back it up, or other studies to conferm it. Burn in he** HD-DVD!
screw those so call experts, they couldn't tell the differents from their own a?? and a hole in the ground. beside when you hear them speak, you can tell that most of them don't game. the only gaming they see are from behind their children backs when they do bother to make home, once in a blue that is!
well this guy doesn't do his homework right. he's just upset that his format of choice sucks balls.
According to this tool new PS3 owners are asking themselves, hmm, why does sony put a blu-ray logo on the FRONT of the box and why did they include this Spider-Man 3 blu-ray disc in the box? HDDEAD group has their heads stuck in the ground and they are spreading misinformation to consumers hoping that they too have their heads similiarly stuck underground. I don't know any PS3 owners who don't know that the machine can play blu-ray discs, and I myself have about 8 blu-ray discs and watch them on my ps3 all the time, and when I have friends and family over to watch a movie, we watch it in hi-def natively or upscaled on my PS3. HD-DUD, it is now time to give up hope, stop wasting our time already.
ppl are not that dumb to not know what the stuff they bought can do....what a dummy this guy is....experts you say huh!!!
Ha ha 60 percent dont know their ps3 can play movies? I find that very hard to believe! People are stupid but no that stupid
expert my ass, 360 owners don't watch movies on their console because it doesn't come with HD-DVD player, they hafta buy 'em separately...that's why...and he can't say the same with PS3...before i bought mine i know what's in the package, and i am certainly using whatever uses my PS3 is for. this guy doesn't know a thing he's talking about.
Consoles arnt used for movies? really? some one should have told me sooner as i watch more stuff on my PS3 that i do play games on it.
He does have a point I am slowly realizing. THe majority of PS3 users aren't but enough are to make a dent and HD-DVD camp is looking for any reason to combat the combined threat of blu ray stand alones and the smal fraction of PS3 users that ourchase blu ray. What I see with HD-DVD is that they are having a firesale with thier hardware just to show to studio big wigs that they will sell more after getting a larger base of people with their low prices and their free movie offers. It smells like fear.
That being said, their strategy might work...... and I put a heave emphasis on might. When their base start to question why the disney, fox ,sony, MGM and lionsgate movies arent in the HD DVD aisle then the wave might change. If warner does go exclusive to BR( or HD-DVD) this format war will get really heated. I will continue to purchase Blu rays because of the built in feature of my PS3 but I am starting to wonder if I might have to buy an HD-DVD player later on down the road.
EDIT: I see all these combative comments but you do realize that if the majority of PS3 owners in the US were buying blu rays then BR should be way over 2:1 ratio with HD-DVD. I am not sure how it is happening in the rest of the world ( I hear blu ray is killing) but the landscape changing in america does affect me because blu rays are still regional.
i didnt use my ps2 to watch dvds and i aint using my ps3 or 360 for HD movies, i use my pc and i am fine with it not being HD, plus i dont buy movies, i can never watch a film more then once, i jus download stuff
I can't blame him for picking at straws,he's baking a format that is clearly losing!! lol
I will give him the fact that some people dont know it plays BD, but I find it hard to believe someone out there doesnt know it plays DVDs.
OUR PS3 CAN PLAY MOVIES!?!?!?!? NO ONE EVER TOLD ME THAT! SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM THIS IS TRUE
thats funny, this guy is talking and all i heard was, wwaaaaaaaaa my format is losing, waaaaa please buy HDDVD players, waaaaaaaaaa we now have a 51 gb triple layer disc. wwwwaaaaa.
cry me a river Van Wilder, or whatever the frack you name is.
Well HD-DVD is in major trouble because Blockbuster said they are going to go Blu-ray exclusive.
Hmmm....if 13% are using their ps3 as a blu-ray player...and 4 million new ps3's are sold between now & the new year--That means 520,000 new blu-ray users will be on the market. Not a bad figure--in addition, the awareness level of blu-ray & # of HD TV owners will increase over the holdiays pushing that figure to 16-17% (@ a minimum)--making new blu-ray users around 640,000-680,000! Not too shabby for ps3 owners not using blu-ray. Then plan on adding another 450,000 stand alone blu-ray player sales over the holiday--that leaves a total of 1,090,000 to 1,140,000 NEW blu-ray users. HD-DVD plans on adding around 1 million new users this holdiay--looks like blu-ray plans for even more. The sales figures will change little. HD-DVD Retards.
@Staticneuron....
Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD around 4.0-4.5:1 in Europe and Australia
Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD around 9:1 in Japan.
So worldwide blu-ray is TRULY knocking out...US it's a bit closer.
What a retard? Ive used my blu-ray many times to watch movies, there are some post of people sayin they bought a ps3 just for movies. Jeez, dumb ass
13% of people watching Blu-Ray movies on their PS3 is still better then that 0% of Crashbox180 owners that watches HD-DVD on their system. Why? Because that thing uses an old last-gen DVD player and can't even play HD movies. EDIT: Ow wait, I forget that crappy HD-DVD addon drive which uses USB2.0 first and than output the signal via an analog cable. WOW, that will be high quality. /sarcasm.
In other news, "McDonalds spokesman says half the people that go to Burger King, dont know that it serves food." lol. Is this guy serious. Anyone that has seen a PS3 should know that it plays Blu-ray.
I think the issue is most people owning a PS3, don't also own a HD-TV. Hence, yes, most PS3 owners don't play BRs... of course they know the machine can! Fact is ppl buy PS3 as a gaming console, not as a BR player- the PS3 is a cheap, poor BR player, in the same way PS2 was a cheap/poor DVD player... neither could outclass simularly priced stand alone players, and neither would be considered by movie buffs as their source player.
I've met quite a few PS3 owners, and never one that didn't know it can play BD and DVD. Heck, I don't even know an Xbox360 owner who doesn't know the PS3 can do that.
The HD-DVD camp is desperate. If you compare their propaganda, it's clear that they're lying. On one hand, even though they don't dispute that Blu-Ray is outselling them left and right, they claim that what's more important is the number of discs bought by owners of stand-alone players, whining that BD purchases by PS3 owners skew the stats unfairly; now, on the other hand, they claim that PS3 owners don't buy BDs. Bah!
For me, movie playing ability has been a big factor in my console buying choices for quite a while. Back when I bought my PS2 on release day, I knew it could play DVDs, and it was my first and only DVD player for quite a while. The same thing is true now for the PS3, its my first and only Blu-Ray player, and part of my reasoning for plunking down the cash for the machine was the Blu-Ray playability.
Thats why he is called a HD-DVD expert, because he doesn't now anything about Bluray, and I wonder when he speaks does he realize he is making himself sound like an idiot. If he wants to be a HD-DVD expert he needs to have more publicity talking about HD-DVD not another way to try and make a stab at Bluray because right now he sounds more like a moron than a expert.
LOL I know atleast 3 people who bought the PS3 specifically for the ability to watch BluRay movies.
Wow this guy is a moron, and does not show his proof of this. Everyone I know that has a PS3 over the age of 14 know its a Blu Ray HD player. I have 2 Blu Ray Movies and am buying Planet Earth this week.
Even my 10 year old cousin is getting a PS3 this Xmas and he said to me "I can't wait to play Spider-man 3 High Def on my dad's plasma tv". To my surprise, i just said you think your smart or something huh
LOL!!!! What are these cats smoking....I been watching movies on my PS brand products since the PS2 and Im sooo loving the blu-ray and dvd playback on my PS3. Im pretty sure my PS3 have seen more T&A in the year its been out than he has seen in his lifetime...lol...
but if 13% use their consoles to watch movies and blu-ray is trouncing HD DVD, then imagine when the rest, Im not gonna say 87%, but 27%(40%-13% for the slow) start watching movies then its not gonna look good for his camp. And lets not even start talking about stand alone players, computers, car players and camcorders....wow..these guys might be in a pickle...
Actually instead of researching how many people use their ps3 for movies they should research how many people believe their xbox can play HD DVD out the box, you will be suprised, alot of people think so for some reason, i correct people frequently
This guy is a jackass. Everybody i know who would buy a PS3 cites Blu-Ray as one of the reasons. What i do see, however, is a ton of people who thought they could watch HD-DVDs on their Xbox 360's straight out of the box and were extremely pissed when they bought it and found out they needed a completely seperate machine. Microsoft, i'm sorry that you were so freaking greedy and stupid to choose the strategy that you did, but give it a rest. Nobody likes a sore loser.
Oh and funny thing, I was watching this couple today shopping for a panasonic HD-DVD player today, and I tell my father Loudly,
"Dad look at that Sony Blu Ray Player, it's so expensive, meanwhile people can buy the cheapest Playstation 3 for only $379.99 (20gb) and have a blu ray player and a gaming console in the same thing, and its SONY"
I noticed the lady from the corner of my eye watching and listening, than as i finished and started to push the cart, i seen the lady quickly run to her husband and start pointing at me, the blu ray player, and most likely told him about the PS3" hahaha thats good stuff
psn id: gingo.... who cares if loads of people are using it or not the fact is that it is a blu ray which people can use if they want and if they dont know it is one they are just ignorant because its in the manual
Well, as far as I know, I've just ordered Die Hard 4 on Blu-ray. And I only have a PS3 to play Blu-ray movies... And Sony is also making PS3 Blu-ray ads now, so... Mister Wynendaele... You are so WRONG!!!
..and on the box.
It is widely accepted that the ps3 is one of the HIGHEST quality blu-ray players available, and with its frequent firmware updates, it will remain on the bleeding edge of the technology. So to 23, please don't post misinformation like that again.
Now thats just idiotic, that like saying no one knew the PS2 can play DVD movies when it came out too. :E Of course you can play it, read the damn manuel or look at the supported formats sheesh. Also with the amount of deals sony has with bundling Blu-ray movies on the PS3's 80gig, I think other major movie companies will make sure they take advantage of the holiday season to make specials deals as well.
i use it just not much for brd, they dont rent it, anyways i used my ps2 for dvds until about 7months ago when something happend to my laser :P btw the dvd upscaler isnt there for decoration and some people get ps3 for multimedia and not just for gaming
This guy is not that bright. I think people know that these formats can be played on the PS3 and since the system usally comes with a Blu-Ray disc this guy is "bleeping" stupid.
asking an HD DVD for an advince or consultant is most unwise thing to do
yes i must admit i didn't know about either till the court ruleing "Stupid VS Everyone". WHAT I FUCCKKING IDIOT
lmao! Expert? Yeah - since when? 60% my a*se.. everyone knows you can play DVD's on the PS3 - you could on the PS2. Everyone knows you can play Blu-ray on the PS3 and millions (myself included) DO play our movies on the PS3. Gee the amount of times ive used it when the tellie wasnt free to watch WHATEVER has been great. This guy is an absolute idiot.
Ok how can they find these statistics? I know of 15 people at school who have PS3's and are using it for Blu-Ray and Dvd, along with me. Heck my Uncle bought a PS3 as a high definition player for blu-ray a week ago for his new plasma. This guy is just pmsing
I think that psu shouldnt even have posted such a stupid article... I mean just for the statement not that many people even know it can play dvds is totally an ignorant statement. 120millions+ ps2 sold and every1 knew it could play dvds... why cant ps3?? AND IT F8KN SAYS IT CAN PLAY BLUE RAY ON THE DAM BOX... Who would by something that doesnt know what they are buying. Also blue ray is not just for the gamers specifically but for the game devs. All games are created on blue ray discs so how could you not know. I would smack the shyt out of this person if i ever seen him in real life. Also maybe this guy is just mad he cant find good movies on HD-DVD and wants to spread bad propaganda but ohwell. His words will affect no1 and blue-ray will live on.
wait so your telling me that my PS3 can't play my vinyl records ? whats a dvd
i have ps3 and i watch Blu-ray movie evrey weekend so whats this dum expert trying to say?
@sorrow880
nice numbers. I had a feeling blu ray was killing elswhere. Personally I think most of it can be attributed to the PS3.
well i know i use mine for dvd and blue ray so whats he talking about
i would like to know how this company got these numbers. first off where did they access a list of people that own a ps3? sony? i highly doubt it since they are a competitor. does microsoft give apple their registry? seriously...this guy has no way of knowing how many ps3 users play br movies. and if he did do a study his sample was probably soo small it is useless. i have over 20 blu-ray movies now and probably over 30 by the time christmas is over. why is blockbuster and all these companies saying they are only stocking blu-ray movies if no one with a ps3 is renting them or buying them. we all know the only blu-ray player on the market right now offsetting player sales of the cheap HD-DVD is the ps3. if ps3 owners aren't buying blu-rays..then like stand alone owners must have purchased the entire blu-ray catalog to keep blu-ray sooo far ahead in movie sales. this guy is a quack.
I lost all interest when they put a space in percent.
To 36... your not a serios AV fanatic are you? It isn't accepted at all that PS3 is one of the highest quality BR players, this is obviosly you being a delusional fanboy... you can't even pickup one of the highest quality DVD players for $800 never mind a high quality BR player. I understand your devotion to PS3 but please DYOR before making such silly claims!
I have 16 movies on blu ray now and im abouth to buy me 3 more
@GR33DY; have you also tried to insert your "laser disc movies" in your PS3?? LOL. These so 60% of PS3 owners from their research must be employees of the hd-dud promotion groups (who proudly admitted that they have a PS3 and dumb enuff not to realise it doesn't play any type of movie what so ever!) who participated in their Friday afternoon office orgy...ummm, anyways...this probably only involved around 20 or less people/gamers altogether!
This guy is an expert in stupidity.About the only thing I can't put in my PS3 is a piece of toast.I'm sure Sony will figure out a way for it to do that soon enough. What a joke.
So "expert" now means giving a biased opinion on something every once in a while? I didn't see any mention of how his HD DVD camp is doing right now...
---
Seriously, if you don't know your PS3 plays Blu-ray, let alone DVD, you deserve to have your PS3 smashed and have every shard strategically placed in your neck.
Nice one Vipir.
It's like he got his "independent research" from Danae. (non-sequitor, check the comics in the paper)
In other words, it's B. S. We all know that it plays blu-ray. A lot of the consoles have a blu ray packed in.
Also, myself and many thousands of others have enough blu-ray movies to make up for 30 or more PS3 owners who don't know their console can play a movie... If those users exist!
LOL. The funny thing about that is, is that if this were correct that's just sad. So Blu Ray is kicking HD DVD's *** THIS bad and no one with a PS3 knows it plays Blu Ray? He's takin a shot at his own product, here.
Im a gamer and I use my PS3 to play movies! Very often! Its my primary movie player ffs!
haha i never knew my ps3 had blue ray but i only own 10 blue ray movies n when i bought my ps3 the box had a big logo that says blue ray disk lol....... Oliver u can kiss my a##
Hey chimmy!!!!(post 23) YOU ARE ACTUALLY dumber than the guy from the HD DVD group the PS3 is a great BD PLAYER & a great DVD PLAYER in a test in the UK OF ALL HD PLAYERS BOTH BD & HD DVD guess what was best PS3 for picture and value because it plays CD,SACD,DVD (UPSCALED),BD its a media centre (has an award for that also!!!) and h3ll it a Fantastic games machine with the games coming out over next weeks/months R&C,COD4,UT3,HAZE etc.
Also in case any from dumb @55 HD DVD group read this 6 months a PS3 OWNER 5 GAMES ON BD & 5 BD MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rob
Lol..uhh..i think wrong..alot of people got ps3 to play blu ray because its a cheaper blu ray player..
Sorry to put another nail in your format's coffin, Olivier, but I DO use my PS3 for movies. I even bought a Bravia to watch them on. And this Christmas, I plan on having a Blu-ray buying frenzy! Not only am I buying BD movies for myself, but every movie on my Christmas list is on BD also.
Bye bye HD-DVD... don't let the door hit your butt on the way out!
jphuff what makes you think that the "millions " of PS3 (assuming worldwide numbers) are not contributing to Blu ray sales. The 2:1 ratio is only in the US my friend. It is higher for blu ray in other countries...... where the majority of PS3 sales have been. I am woried about the US but it is not a question that the PS3 is pushing sales and the movie companies know this.
Sounds like someone is in denial
The HD-DVD camp is so desperate righ now they will say anything!
OK HERE WE GO!!!! My wife, doesnt know anything about a PS3 and knows it plays BRDVD's...AND...MY FATHER IN LAW WHO IS 53 hardly knows how to turn on a PS3 but he knew the dang thing was the cheapest blue ray player on the market and bought one just to PLAY BLUE RAY MOVIES!!!!! This guy knows the truth that HDDVD is going to fail. But he cant say that b/c he would get fired. Hes paid to say this stuff!!! Guys and gals just be proud you saw a winner and knew to go with the PS3.
this is something i dislike about how sony, or the general media, talk about the PS3. "it can play blue ray movies!". thats nice but i don't think that should be one of the primary good things about the PS3. it should focus more on the games and it being a GAMING machine because of blue-ray. not just a cheap blue ray player as if it has nothing else to go by.
My playstation has always been my dvd/bluray/game player... I use it like 20 times more than my dvd player.
what i use my ps3 for movies everytime i watch a movie, and thats quite a bit. Although i havent watched any bluray movies yet, i plan to once i get an hd tv. My friend has a few blurays already, so this guys full of.............
Yeah right, gamers don't kno their consoles can play DVDs.
Ok, i agree a lot of gamers do more gaming than watching movies, but saying that they are unaware that the PS3 can play Blu-ray discs and DVDs on their PS3 is just ludicrous.
LOL this guys only crying cos the 360 can't play HD-DVDs as standard!
I LOVE watching blu rays on my PS3. And it upscales DVD. I friggin love my PS3.
It is all in the title... *HD DVD* expert
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
chimmy......ur secrets out we know your one of the experts
ooo..apologies, looks like I upset a few people. What was I thinking? Of course Sony invested millions into a brand new format and much more into making low, mid and high end BD players that were outclassed by it's own much cheaper game console. Makes perfect business sense! Point is PS3 is much more affordable than full HD setup- most PS3 owners may not currently be using blue ray movies as they don't/can't afford the setup- those that can afford it would probably not use the PS3 (or cheap HD-DVD player) as the main movie player... it's fan noise alone would annoy them. Stand alone players would have a dedicated video chip- more processing = more noise. Also components of high end players would be higher quality- you get what you pay for. Agreed it isn't looking good for HD-DVD, but PS3 is not the reason it's failing.
Crack Smokers!!! This guy is an idiot. What kind of so called expert thinks that people are going to lay the money down that they do on a console like the PS3 and not know what it is capable of. Guess we don't read the outside of the box either. Whatever study they are allegedly using needs to be tossed for if it is real, it is inaccurate to say the least.
Any gamer or true electronic affectionado would know that the PS3 plays Blu-rays, just like they knew the PS2n played DVDs. Also, any close relative of said gamer/electronics buff would know this as well BECAUSE PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK THEM ABOUT THINGS BEFORE THEY SPEND THE MONEY. Who here hasn't been asked by friends/family which is better? People who don't know ask those who they think do know. HD-DUD is the format of choice for XBOX fanatics and idiots who don't know their a*s from a hole in the ground who don't know what the he*ll they're doing and don't bother to ask. Anyone who would waste the money on a stand-alone hddvd player should not be allowed near money of sharp objects.
Howard Fringlebikker is an analist for Girlbuns & Guns Magazine and he has been studying the habits of console owners for 15 years now.
After one & a half decades of exausting research he has finaly come to the conclusion that most game console owners like to play games...
W/e,HD dud is going down and nothing can stop this.
I've already started re-newing/collecting blu-ray instead of buying dvds, after watching the free Casino Royale blu-ray ive been hooked! phenomenal picture quality! I'm getting bored of this war... hurry up and give up HD-DVD!
My question is "Did he ask a bunch of five year olds?" I wish I could see this HD DVD spokesman so I could punch him in the face. How can he be so d**n stupid? Obviously people are watching movies in their PS3s. People know it can play DVDs (unless they're 5 years old), and if people weren't watching BluRay movies in them then why the sudden industry shift towards BluRay? It's obvious, the more PS3s sold the more BluRay players are out there. I don't know anyone that has any of those $1000 ones, but I know people with PS3s. He's just pi$$ed because he's getting his @$* kicked by BluRay!
All ps3 owners know that our console plays blu-ray.
This is the reason we re beating hdvd in sales
HD-DVD (ass)pert? their area expertise (HDDVD) seems already going to museum and fossilized... its like listening to the DEAD...
Most people know that the PS3 is basically (well when it came out) a cheap blu-ray player. I know that blu-ray players are going down in price or supposed too but if you buy the PS3 its a better deal. You can watch a blu-ray movie in blutiful HD and you can play great HD games on it, its a win/win deal!
