Harrison: LittleBigPlanet recall was "right decision"

Former Sony Worldwide Studios head Phil Harrison has told GamesIndustry.biz that his old employer made "absolutely the right decision" in recalling stellar PlayStation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet from sale.
"I wasn't privy to all of the discussions and debate that went on within Sony," he said, "But I know they would have thought very deeply about it, and at the highest level of the company."
Last week watchful PSN users discovered that one of the game's background tracks contained extracts from the Qu'ran, an appropriation of scripture some Muslims have found offensive. Sony issued a worldwide recall last Friday.
"On reflection I think it was absolutely the right thing to do," Harrison went on, "Because LittleBigPlanet set out from day one to be a game for the entire world - and if there was anything that accidentally detracted from that vision and made the game not fun for the entire world, then the game would have fundamentally failed in its mission."
"So I think Sony took absolutely the right decision - painful though it was, and frustrating though it might be for gamers who were looking forward to it. It only seems to have heightened the anticipation, so I think it'll end up being a win, and full credit to Media Molecule for turning around a fix as quickly as they did."
Now president of Atari, Harrison was an advocate of Media Molecule's glorious 2.5D platforming venture from the outset. "I think people are going to be blown away by the game," he gushed, "And while I'm obviously sad for the stumble, I don't think it will affect the long term success of the game one iota."
LittleBigPlanet is now down for release on November 5 in the UK, in the week commencing November 3 in Europe, and in the week commencing October 27 in North America.

WTF? The rest of Europe gets it before the UK? WTF. It seems that almost anything with some Muslim reference nowadays has to be removed because it might cause affence.

As for the "right decision", I think it was more like the "politically correct terrorist win" decision :/ I don't know why they don't just release these on all the same date, same hour, all over the world. Luckily I'm in North America, but I feel sorry for people in other parts of the world that have to wait. I just hope Australia doesn't ban the game ;)

"politically correct terrorist win"?
Is the exact nonsense that is being talked about. It was supposedly offending to certain muslims. I know this is a hard concept to grasp but not all followers of islam are terrorist. I have not heard of stories where terrorist decide to leave messages on gaming forums.

wrong decision.this was giving in to the radical parts of islam.the majority of muslims was n would not be offended by this after all it was a muslim who wrote/sang the song.also sony did nothing about the church scene in resistance:fall of man they didnt bother to pull that game n that did cause offence to even more people.i think its disgusting of sony to give in to the radical muslims,it sets a trend where every game, drawing, song and film will have to be giving the thumbs up by a religion, thats not freedom its a form of prison that i dont wanna live in.

@12
I see...so anyone who doesn't agree with you is a radical & therefore a terrorist?
Thats like saying I was a terrorist because I am an Irish Catholic & I don't agree with the view that Northern Ireland is a part of Britain. I have my own beliefs & to call me British is offensive to me....so....am I a terrorist?
Yes some people are offended by the song, which means the artist must be getting grief for it as well. The BIG difference is, LBP is a game aimed to entertain everyone and having an offensive lyric in it will not achieve that goal. The artist is not trying to vreate entertainment for everyone.....he has his own aims.
Don't misconstrue the differences here.

i was watching the news yesterday and they had the president of the canadian arab association on talking about this subject. he didn't find it particularly offensive at all. infact he thought it was peanuts compared to McCain insinuating that Obama is a terrorist. or other incidences of 'isalama-phobia'. and he also said he thinks sony might be doing this for free PR.

@13 do u even know what ur talking about.where did i say if nobody agrees with me there a terrorist infact where did i mention terrorist.its people like u who kick off over any little thing that ruin the lives for most people.its u who doesnt agree with some ones statement u have to spit the dummy.northen irland has nothing to do with this.this was words out of the koran put in a song lol.most muslims agree its stupid n not offence at all.the only people complaining are the radical muslims the type that say down with america n dont belive in girls being educated and thats what sony have bowed to which is wrong.next time do ur research n know what ur talking about cause there wasnt offensive words.its was the words being from the koran that got losers like u moaning.you complain about other people`s consideration for entertainment, well guess what the majority of the world don`t mind it and didnt take offence so u why should we shape our entertainment to make minority happy.btw the people of northen ireland want to be part of the uk thats why its part of the uk .its called democracy but i take it u would prefer sharia law

@Markwesker
Read your own posts again......"its people like u who kick off over any little thing that ruin the lives for most people."
I seem to remember a couple of posts back that its actually people like you kicking up about SONY delaying the game for a week to ensure no offense is caused.
And my second post is veyr relevent if you would take the time to try & understand the point.....not just read words on a page.
So you actually know most muslims?
And you actually know that the only ones offended are those that are radical. Explain to me what you refer to as being "radical" in this context? Maybe my understanding is off...who knows. But your point is way off.
And the people of NI want to be part of the UK? I suppose you know all the people of NI as well huh? You do nothing but contradict yourself.
If you are so knowledgeable, then explain why NI had so much trouble if its people wanted to be part of the UK? Don't go there....you really don't have a clue.
Point being, you over-generalize everyone and make really really stupid assumptions about people.
Why should Muslim traditionalists be segregated for their beliefs? If they are offended, then thats how it is.....there is no blame for that. SONY exec.s obviously see what you in your wisdom seem to be missing. The product was designed as a Universal game....a game for everyone. If it segregates one person because of beliefs, then it fails in its goal. Its hardly worth compromising such good product ( an profits) on the back of 1 bit of music.
This has lots of public image tied up with this & for SONY as a company, this is the right choice.
For the product , it is the right choice.
And for gaming in general, it is the right choice.
And for the record. YOU didn't shape this form of entertainment, nor did you have any part to play in its design. You have absolutely no involvement in its course what-so-ever.
You simply play they game, designed by others for a purpose already stated.......Its a game for everyone by the people who created it. And only they have a right ( and their publishers) to say what is right for the game or not. If it is bad enouhg to be deemed offensive, then it is offensive....get over it.

people r sick of you some cant say something without being called a racist and now i mention some 1 who is radical u acuse me of calling them a terrorist.there`s plenty of people like u who will whine n moan over any little thing cause they support radical parts of a religion but it doesnt make them a terrorist, learn the difference.just like u said the words was offensive which was wrong.the putting of words from the koran into a game was deamed offensive by a small number of people ,thats right small number of people this doesnt have no effect on profits and and if it did its worth it for the freedom of speech .most of the worlds muslims live in asia .sony make there most sales in the west so dont make it out 2be good for profits.you dont know what your talking about cause u can never make a game or a song or film that is for everyone lol.you never make everyone happy all of the time thats a fact that u didnt know, there always will be a complainer like yourself.you do not represent the majority of people or muslims that was happy with this game.the bottom line is sony gave in to a very small minority of people.i could understand if it was blatent abuse towards a religion but it wasnt.talk about public image for sony dont u watch the news or read the newspapers there all saying its political correctness gone mad and sony have been too sensitive.for every1 of the small amount of people who was offended there`s now alot more offended with sony for restricting free speech.funny they didnt pull r:fall of man for the church scene.
oh btw yes me and millions other do shape this form of entertainment people like u destroy this type of entertainment, yes i do have muslim friends,i dont need to know people from N.I. to know they wanna be part of the uk cause there votes tell the world they wanna be part of the uk,u really r thick lol.oh and some muslims dont agree with girls being educated or people showing affections in public like holding hands or kissing so lets make it all illegal n give in to the minority cause they might not buy stuff lol see how pathatic your argument is.
edit:dont ever lie about what i said again.i never kicked over lbp being delayed a week i kicked off over restricting freedom of speech which is a big thing.haha your the type of person that twists n turn things and dam right lie to try n make people agree with you just like when u said i called people terrorists u lier.creep try telling the truth in an argument

Again with the generalizations.
Offensive to a small number? Did you take a poll within the global Muslim community? SONY didn't, but they realise that if it offends a handful, which are a minority that made themselves heard, then there is a great chance it would offend a wider population of the Muslim community that do not make themselves heard.
Freedom of speach is all well & good for western society to spout about. But you have no understanding of the Muslim community & have no place to throw "Freedom of Speech" down their throats. It is not their way & this proves your ignorance of other communities. You have to try & understand from within their beliefs regardless if you agree with them or not.
Heres an example of freespeech....how about walking down to your local police station & call them all the names under the sun. Lets see how much your freespeech holds up. There are rules to adhere to , even with western standards of freedom of speech.
And don't talk about NI like you know the place you uneducated little weasel. Votes? What the heck are you talking about? What votes? I live here & I can tell you now that NI, were NEVER, EVER given a choice. If you are talking about the "Good Friday Agreement" then do a little research. That was about equality...not borders.
You dare to call me thick with grammar like that? Whatever.
I'm done talking to someone who is as full of chit as you are.

Guenteng is right. It is a game for everyone. Regardless who it was written by, it is offensive. Also, mabey you should take an English and History class. I'm glad other people are supporting Phil. I can't tell you how many threads are about "Sony being stupid for the stupid Muslims" Glad other people can see not just for them self. Free speech isn't a problem. It's about being a game for everyone.

get lost muslims and everyone else that come to live in the west know full well we support free speech.your hpyocrite saying we should try and understand them, who`s them a small number of people, how many do u know who speak somali.no muslim should come to live in the west then try n shove there way of life down our throats.get real this pathatic and so small .what happens next when they get offended by something small again.keep twisting things aswell cause u know ur wrong.giving abuse to police is different to putting words in a game lol why did a muslim make the song.common sence tells u to have manners n not to give people abuse n common sence tells you this lpb offence bull is stupid.your in the minority cause most of the world dont agree with you.and whta sick weirdo brings N.I. into this like that in anyway relates lol.part of the people see themselfes as british other part see themselfes as r of ireland do ur research u muppet n see what the fuss is about but wait i suppose ur the type of person who agrees with people bombing others to get there point across f**ing gimp.
@21 sit down son stop acting like ur hard u boring di**head just like ur boring gay name n picture
@22 take history lessons your self since u dont know what ur on about just act like a muppet say take history, try going uni u retard.you can never make a game for everyone u never will cause u cant please all of the people all of the time,6billion people on earth and there`s alwayssome1 who doesnt like something, get over it n get use to it n stop living in a dream world.what i do know is alot more people will be unhappy n offended if everygame is made to make muslims happy.btw this should set a trend now n all games with the mention of christ or church scenes like r;fall of man should be pulled oh n all films n music.
stop acting like phil harrison is a god.u do know he left sony.he`s a professional and what he says in public is totally different to what he thinks in private, sony r is ex employer and won`t burn his bridges or say bad word about them or nobody would employ him again, learn how business works n politics u muppets some1 needs to go uni .34 year old n trying to tell me how the world works lol grow up u loser .thankgod ur not in charge of a country,oh wait i just used the word god ,i might get banned patched up n put bk out so i appeal to everyone hahahaha

XD you crack me up so much I just could not resist one last post.
You still continue to make a fool of yourself.
Look at your own posts again and say again who doesn't use bombs to get their point across. Look at your own history....and what has this got to do with Muslims in western countries. You claim no one mentioned terrorism, yet you make that pointed discussion in your disagreement with everyone.
And another thing..the simple fact that a small country may be in the minority where one thing is concerned, doesn't mean they should have less of a voice or less respect. Doesn't western society also preach justice for all? Isn't America also big on claiming fairness to the minorities?
You are also a minority for your idiotic & ignorant views. Should your posts be deleted, because as a minority you do not matter?
You shout so much about freedom of speech, yet would deny it to others....thats very American of you. Anyone has a right to make their voices heard as long as it is within respected boundries of the law. And everyone has the right to listen and act on what they hear as long as it is within the boundries of the law.
XD..Your ignorance is truly astounding...only being surpassed by your apparent stupidity.

your not even making sence now.i asked u if u supported the idea of bombing people since u keep going on about N.I. and how anti british u are.blah blah u should really be paying for this lesson muppet cause im gonna give u another 1.ok it has everything 2do with muslims in the west cause there the only ones who would have the standerd of living to be able to buy the game,or do u think everybody as a ps3 in pakistan, iran, iraq and everyone can understand somali dont know if u noticed but those countries r struggling with food much less a walmart 2buy a ps3 n lbp from.how ignorant u are. try looking on the forums n tv and most people agree it was uncalled for p.c gone mad so ur in the minority troll or do u need me to take u bk to the 130posts on lbp where most people took my view not urs .try pulling ur head out ur a** n see what most people r saying.you hypocrite dam right i think people should have freedom of speech and not have people like u trying to control what people say ,couldn`t take my comment so start to cry whine and use (i was offended card) sorry but u aint gonna control n stop what i say or anybody else its called a free country, lets hope ur comments get banned for trying to control n influence what some1 has to say.
why dont you prech what u say,yeh people have the right to say what they want so long as its within the law and that song in a game was within the law, there was no offensive words in the song.the offence to some who i still have never seen or heard was putting words from koran in the game.but yet i never heard of any muslims saying they was offended or not buying the game now.
trust me america is not where it is today by banning every book, film, game, song with a couple of words from the bible in it or any other holy book, common sence prefails which obviously u dont have .but please check bk on all the comments about lbp from2day about the new patch n when the news broke and ur in the minority di**head
