High street retail will continue to play vital part, says Hirai

Posted on May 16th, 2008 at 07:59 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazuo Hirai has said that he is confident traditional high street retail sales will continue to play a significant role for the platform holder despite the inevitable growth in digital distribution.

The company had previously expressed its belief that digital distribution would become the preferred method for purchasing content by 2018, accounting for as much as 90 per cent of all videogame sales.

However, Hirai asserts that regardless of how popular digitalized methods become, Sony was keen to maintain its relationship with high street retailers, noting, “you might be able to download a game but you can’t download a console”.

“I think the relationships we have with retail in all of our markets are very important and that’s something that we are going to make sure we keep intact. We need to have that relationship with retailers because you might be able to download a game but you can’t download a console,” he told MCV.

I hate the idea of downloading my games, I wan't to be able to pick my game up and put into either my console or a freind's one and not to wory about corrupt data on hard disk making you loose an entire game that you payed full price, plus this will just increas piracy!

With the new online service, the GRID... It may be possible to download a full HD game in the matter of seconds, but I do not think everyone will want to go the. You will need a LARGE amount of space on a hard drive. Online downloads are okay to a limit.

The problem with the grid is you have to have 100s or 1000s of servers/providers with the data. so, instead of grabbing the info one section at a time from a limited source(official server) it grabs different sections from lots of different servers at once. It would be very impractical to have 10000s of severs all with the stuff on it, especially as the overload of people all downloading at once could crash the servers.

@princevegeta1980: Yeah, I would hate to have to download all my games. WTF is wrong with having your game box+the instruction book and the disc? Besides, it looks pretty damn good when you have it on your shelve, like a collection. Now what, should we have to show our HDD?

Gee, sometimes, I hate technology...
