Hitachi creates 100GB Blu-ray disc

Hitachi has recently completed a four-layer Blu-ray disc that can store up to 100GB worth of information.
The company has also stated that with a simple firmware update, all Blu-ray players on the market should be able to read these new higher capacity discs.
This announcement comes not long after the HD DVD camp received preliminary approval for a 51GB three layer disc, which features 1GB more than the current BDs.
It is very unlikely that any movies will make their way onto these new quad layer discs, as 100GB is much more space that is needed. Also, until these larger discs become mass-produced, it will be much cheaper for movie companies to make two disc sets. Games, however, may benefit from this move, as space is the biggest limiting factor right now.

Muahahaha... HD-DVD is so owned now! Another nail in the coffin for HD-DVD... Just a few more...
@ Gingo; I think in the future larger amounts of space will be used, either for larger levels etc or less compressed cinematics... I think it will be used, not right now but sometime in the near future.

A movie may never need a 100gb disk but a HD tv serise collection would be awsome. Just think, no more multidisk sets, just one disk for an ENITRE season in full HD with extra features and stuff. The first Game to use this would be freaking spectacular I bet.

u could put FFXII and versus XII on one disc now or put the entire kingdom hearts series on one disc. now that would be cool. he!! why not put the entire compilation of FF VII with the movie included. this is so cool :D

Sony developed a 200gb 8 layer disc in 2004 and back then they said they was to plan mass production of 100gb discs. Also TDK made a 200gb disc last year.
HD-DVD isn't even at 50gb yet. The 3 layer disc isn't 51gb if each layer is 15gb. II thought this was already cleared up, HD-DVD just wanted to sound bigger than blu-ray by adding 1 more GB. Anyway HD-DVD will be dead before any tiple layer HD-DVD comes to the market.

Way to go Hitachi!!!
Lets put this into perspective for the M$ camp. Halo 1, 2, 3, Halo Wars, Gears of War, Bioshock, Forza 1 and 2, Lost Planet, and Dead Rising...ALL on ONE Blu-ray disc. Is Microsoft screwed this generation? Should they have adopted next-gen storage? I'll let you decide.

wow .. but I never think they will use this capacity for Games of ps3 .
and I am really feeling good when I heard that HD-DVD has like this capacity about 51 then we never suffer from the shortage of DVD9 which's due to make many companies overlook adjusting games on xbox 360 .
I am more confedint of HD dvd's future , because it no doubt will expand the strength to 150 giga not only 100 giga ..
but I want to ask you >
is kind of this HD DVD available on Games or it's entirly dedicated to Films and Movies ???

So gaming developers could litterally perhaps use hitachi's 100gb 4 layer bd discs for like maybe lets say ffxiii uses it i think it would be very nice but 50gb is just as good. :).
Another thing 51gb from the hd dvd camp them mentioning it isnt such a big deal since they dont have much companies backing their support lulz.

if anything game developers could put more than one game on a disc they could put the entire final fantasy series on one disc in hi def or put mgs 1 2 3 and 4 in hi def for example get it =]

Can anyone smell all three Lord of the Rings films (extended cuts of course) on one disc...in HD????????? thats a 12 hours sit your bum in your seat BD if ever there was one...of course, chuck all 6 star wars films in and you're laughing! Add this news to the news that the PS3 is getting a price cut next week and the system will be flying off the shelves...speaking of the price cut...had to warn a guy not to buy on in HMV today...still charging £425 for the "old" value pack...consider that my good deed for the week...

CRAZeeeee BUT I AM LOVING IT. IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO PLAY TWO GAMES FROM ONE DISK. NO MORE GETTING UP AND CHANGING OUT DISKS. THE POTENTIAL FOR UPGRADE IS THERE SO IT IS GOOD THAT WE AS PS3 OWBERS WILL BE ABE TO EXPERIENCE THAT JUST FROM A SIMPLE UPGRADE. DEVELOPERS CANNOT COMPLAIN ABOUT LACK OF SPACE NOW. THE COST BEETER BE REASONABLE. ANYWAY I AM GLAD THT THIS HAS HAPPENED NOW SPIDERMAN 12&3 CAN BE PLACED ON ONE DISC AND OTHER MOVIES WITH SEQUELS. POOR HD-DVD.LOL.

Hitachi said that they only need a system update to allow the blu-ray players to play these 100GB blu-rays, right?
So I'm sure Sony's working on a ps3 update for this :D

@JD: lol, nice try, New Line would never put all three LOTR movies on one disc, too much money in selling them all seperately. I guarantee they will release theatrical cuts first, then a few months later release the extended. Double and triple dipping ftl.

@jrlcgmx: They will update firmmare the same way they do for the PSP and PS3 owners who don't have internet. Sony would use the disc to carry a firmware update and they would update that way.
@Fry-Man: Yes, in HD-DVDs, each layer has 15GB capacity. However, like hard drives, they can make sectors that are closer together to allow higher capacity. It's the same way hard drive capacities have reached so high and stay the same size [physically].

I'm surprised that firmware updates can help Blu-ray players read these new quad-;ayered disks. :) Though I am really digging the idea of having WHOLE seasons of Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, Family Guy, etc be just on one disk. The main question with that is if it will cost twice or even three times as much since it has yet to be mass produced.
Also, will this effect downloadable content in the future for PSN or will they go hand in hand? I guess we will have to wait and see what pricepoint and what ventures Hitachi is going for once they unleash it upon the masses.

Uncool, maybe when they do finally start to use 100gb BD's...they may test it out on tv series' rather than a movie or games (porting a season of a tv show shouldn't take as long as making a game!). So then Star Trek fans can be treated with a decade of seasons with less discs in the packages!! But I can't see this kind of thing happening until late next year?!? So that prices may equate to what it would be now!? Here's hoping to greater games with larger worlds! As far as I know, it is sounds (great quality sound) that require a lot more space!

I do not think developers wanna even mess with a 100gb disc way to time consuming but great for movies and tv to blu-ray shows yup hd-dvd still has support from various companies and this 100gb blu-ray might not even reach production you never know so you can never say its over till its over

Ummm this is a dumb argument. OHD's start at 300GB for the Optical disc by InPhase so ... based on the Bluray has more capacity potential so it wins argument - Bluray would loose to OHD.
Capacity & performance must increase in direct proportion. So has anyone increased the transfer rate of Bluray as it is appallingly slow. OHD's are 2200% faster than sustained throughput of a Bluray.
The joke here is that Hitachi publicly dumped Bluray as the optical product it was planning to use in their HDS Storage business. Instead, Hitachi's media subsidiary; Maxell signed an agreement to go with OHD instead and is now a developer of OHD media. Hitachi does not make a single commercial product using Bluray. It announced the discontinuance at the StorageWorld Symposium held in Singapore at the beginning of the year. Hence this is a funny story.

Yes but arent OHD's considerably more expensive? And require a technology (not unlike Blu-ray at this moment) that is way out of the general consumers reach? I mean with a 100GB BD, you could essentially put all the Lord of the rings on it, in high def, with special features. Why would you need any more than that? Besides the Friday the 13th series of course. Entire seasons of shows in high def on one disc? Its a dream come true...an OHD at this point is nothing more than an external HD on a disc.
