Hook, line and sinker: The Sony experience

Posted on June 13th, 2008 at 14:37 EDT

I think we can all agree that Sony’s PlayStation has brought a lot of diverse people together under one roof in order to enjoy every aspect of gaming together. Whether it was your friends coming over to check out the new JetMoto game on the PlayStation or you were logging online for the very first time with Socom via your PlayStation 2, Sony has helped bring an industry together and push it towards the next level of entertainment. It comes as a shock to know that there was a time where the PlayStation would have never touched base had it not been for Nintendo’s decision to jump ship (older gamers will understand) and I thank them for that.

I started thinking the other day about what brought us all to this point. How has Sony’s gaming console altered your life in terms of the way you pass the time and ultimately the reasoning we’re all here reading this very feature today. My curiosity got the best of me and I decided to find out the answer to that very question by asking some of my fellow readers and forum members how they got hooked on the Sony PlayStation brand. These are their stories:

“I got hooked when I first played Final Fantasy 7 for the original PlayStation. Firstly, the main character Cloud swung a sword that weighed as much as Barrett on a good day drinking at Tifa's Seventh Heaven Bar. I fell in love with this character as well as the whole gang.

This was actually the first RPG I’ve ever played. The graphics were, at least for me, way ahead of their time. Not only that but the melodies of traveling the world gave me shivers during the major boss fights. The story was top notch and made me really interested in the love triangle between Tifa, Aeris and Cloud. I’ve never felt a deeper connection with a cast of characters like I did with this title. After finishing the game several times, I was permanently an enthusiast of gaming, primarily on Sony's PlayStations. “ - Uncool

“I was 6 years old when the original PlayStation released and about 9 when my mom was finally able to buy it. My first game was Crash Bandicoot, which I had actually bought before I got the PlayStation. However, the one that really hooked me was the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. I remember playing Free Skate in the Warehouse for hours. It had replay value too, but mostly because I had no memory card.

Growing up, almost everyone I knew had either the PlayStation or PS2, so I spent the majority of my time on one or the other. When I finally had enough money for a new console, the PS2 was the obvious choice, just like the PS3 was this generation.” - InfernoReaper

“I believe it started when I first got my PS1. I opened it up, got it set up and began to play the only game I had, the one that came with it. I didn't have enough money to purchase another game with it but the game I had was interesting. It wasn't the greatest game, can't really remember what the name of it was but it was multiplayer and you walked around and fought people sort of like Double Dragon.

Anyways, my sister and I would team up and play that game for hours. I was still young and it was just so much fun. I was sold straight out of the box. ” – Fenwick

Just like the last feature where I asked you guys to take part, I’ll do the same and let you guys know how I became addicted to the sleekness of the PlayStation console. Though I had played the original PlayStation from the launch to 1999 and enjoyed a vast array of titles, none sunk into me like Grand Theft Auto London, 1969. Even though I was only 13 years old at the time, I understood and appreciated the innovation as well as the freedom that the franchise was offering to me, as a gamer. From running over the very first pedestrian to watching that comical pool of red splatter around them, ... (continued on next page)

The very first Playstation game I played was Tekken 3.  I was absolutely obsessed.  I had played the arcade version a ton of times, and when I saw the game available for home use without the arcade machine, I ran out to my local department store and plopped down all of the money I had saved up over one year's worth of holidays to get myself a Playstation and Tekken 3.  I played that game until I had beaten it 100% with every character in every mode.  After that, it was FFVII and THPS.  The PS3 is just an extension of the great memories I have of the original Playstation.  I love it!

i used to have an N64, and a friend of mine had a ps2 with GT3. He let me take the system and the game for a day if i gave him my N64, and after that i was hooked and ended buying the ps2 the next day. The ps2 gave me so many memories that made me switch sides and never look back.

Even with FFVII, brave fencer musashi and many other interesting titles. It really didn't hit me until xenogears. I had a discussion with my friend who at the time was playing legend of dragoon and we just had to agree that the Playstation seem to have the highest concentration of awesome games in comparison to the other systems we have owned and played. I can say it again for the PS2 and I can only hope that that trend is repeated with the PS3. As far as I am concerned the PS3 is only slightly ahead of the 360 and thats only because I don't consider titles shared amoung the PC as a testament to a consoles greatness.

i started when i did enough chored and sold enough of my personal belongings to finally afford one. I was hooked way before the console, with promo ads for Parasite Eve and a walkthrough for Resi Evil 2, id go to bed each night and dream of the possibilities the third dimension could possibly bring to life.

When i got it, it came with JetMoto2 and Monopoly. I swiftly went out and tried Syphon Filter, and to say i was hooked, was an understatement.

Silent hill, Resi Evil, Syphon Filter, Tony Hawk, Metal Gear Solid, Tail Concerto, Hot Shots Golf, Incredible Panic, Jersey Devil, Final Fantasy 7 and 8, Star Ocean Second Story, Blo0dy Roar, tekken, and the list just goes on and on and on and on and on with beloved franchises that made me feel as though i had evolved from a casual gamer, to a more hardcore base group.

Thus led to my purchase of the PS2 about a year after it launched. And the good times began all over again :)

My first online experience, actually wasn't Socom, it was Frequency on the PSN Installer disk, and then Amplitude was when i first really started getting into it.

It's nice to see I wasn't the only one hooked by THPS.

I only had two consoles before the PlayStation.  Atari 2600, which was my mom's, and the NES, and I still have no idea where it went.

THPS was a great game (still is!).  IMO, the series went south after 2, but the original will always be my favorite (in the series).  It had a great soundtrack, and the graphics at the time were pretty great.

In my excitement of reminiscing, I forgot all about the PS2!  My library of PS2 games has been called excessive, and the PS2 is still my favorite gaming console of all time.  No other console had such a huge variety of genres depicted so well.  The PS2 had a lot of everything, from obscure and oftentimes *weird* titles (which I love), all the way to mainstream and genres of mass popularity.  I've not owned a non-Sony console since the N64, and I loved that console prior to playing the original Playstation.  Much love for the Playstation brand!

Well i was an Amiga guy through and through.  Consoles just didn't cut it.  I saw the PS1 in a store with Wipeout running on it and i was stunned.  It wasn't until i saw Tomb Raider, Resident  Evil and Formula 1 that my interest was sparked again.  Then the brother in-law bought his around and i actually got to play those games.  I was hooked.  I still love the first Resident Evil, i even bought a second hand cube just to play the remake.  I didn't buy the PS2 until GT3 game out but i bought the PS3 day one.  F1CE, Motorstorm and Resistance were great launch titles.

It started for me with Final Fantasy VII, my brothers and I had seen the commercials on the TV for weeks before it's eventual release. I had always been a gamer, since the original nintendo, and I also played on the sega systems while they lasted, but when PS came out with FFVII it reinvented the way I play video games, I had never played an RPG before, and the story blew me away. From then on I started my PS collection and continued with the PS2, and now, I continue to support sony and the PS3. FFVII is still my favorite game of all time.

Man I feel old. When I was 6, the NES had only been out for a couple of years, and I played the crap outta Super Mario Bros. As for the PlayStation, the first game I played on the system was the original Resident Evil. I was in high school at the time, and I remember being blown away by the game (I was even impressed with the B-movie opening with the American actors). Good times!

@ meatee, I am right there with you.  I started with the NES as well.  But the very first JRPG that I played was Secret of Mana on the SNES.  I think after that, I was hooked with the greatness that was Squaresoft.

the game that really made me need a playstation i think was when i played the original worms at a friends house. i got a playstation but i never got that game (i might get worms someday), but i borrowed it many times from my friend. i also remember playing tekken 3 at two other friends house. the first playstation game i got was soviet strike. i still play it sometimes, it's fun. other early favourites where the crash bandicoot games, abe, gran turismo, the lost world: jurassic park and ridge racer type 4, those games still rock. i also ordered a lot of magazines that included demo discs. i might have about 50 of those demo discs. i don't sell psone games cause i still enjoy them, and i still buy old psone games as well. the best psone games must be metal gear solid and silent hill.

I had been playing games since my cousin had collecovision, but my first console that my folks got for me was the Atari 2600 (Wood Grain FTW!!), Next up was the NES, Genesis, TG-16 w/ CD, and then I got old enoguh to where my mom was like, I'm not buying anymore gaming machines, I just bought you one like....ago. So I got jobs and in my senior year of HS, the Playstation arrived and I haven't looked back since with the brand. It's funny 'cause my mom till this day knows that when a PS branded machine is coming she knows I'm getting it. So even though she's not into them she watches me become a kid all over again with each release. Now I'm married with 2 kids and my wife gets to see me act like a kid, go figure!

my first console was a sega mega drive and when it was time to upgrade i was 7 and i wanted a sega saturn but i got a playstation and was not the happiest of kids, but the first game i got was croc and then that was that. It may not be the best game out there but is the only game that i have played that i haven't been able to finish, even with the level passwords i couldnt beat the boss and this was when i was 16. i didnt get many games for a while but then i got tekken 3 and i was hooked I learned every persons moves except kings combos (im not that good). Then came gran turismo 1 and 2, grand theft auto 1,2 and london. i really loved those games and then my friend got final fantasy 7 and we played that game for ages but then he moved away and i never got to finish it, but as luck would have it i have a copy and i am playing it  now. the playstation 2 was the begining of countless hours of game play on vice city and tekken 4 and tag and 5 just so much fun in a black box. my ps3 on the other hand has given me a few headaches because the hard drie broke 2 days into my summer holidays a few weeks after i had bought it, had to cough up for a new  smaller 40 gig HDD. Anyway can't wait for FF XIII, resistance 2, fallout 2, tekken 6, soul caliber 4 and Little big planet.

I had sega genesis for a while till I was in toy r us one day I would say about 9 yrs old  and we saw the PS1 on display  right next to the sega saturn and  both were showing games. I didn't pick n e of them because I loved my sega, then i remember coming home and my dad had it sitting on top of the living room tv  and he was hooking it up because he wanted to play cd's, he showed me Crash and a game called battle arena toshinden played it for a while but I had a friend that loved rpg's (I wasn't a fan then) FF7 came into the picture we bothed played it countless hours and then FF8 came then 9 I was mostly stuck on rpg's my whole life since then, Castelvania Symphony of the night was great as well, all the RE's, and syphon filter, and MGS all great games, Since I heard there were sequels coming on PS2 there was no other option, I was so hooked on sony that I had got my PS2 stolen 2 times in less than a year when it first launched and still started over each time buying new games, some the same and some new.  After a while though i switched over playing the xbox for a good minute thanks to Halo 1 and 2 and battlefield online that was the first time I played online I was hooked. Rainbow six was the  first for me on PS2. What brought me back to sony was 2 games POP and GOW most definetetly GOW!!! then I realised the truth when looking back at xbox there was nothing but FPS while sony had a diverse of games, and looking into it now its still remains the same thus why I have a PS3 and the rest as they would say is history......
